Well my linux box has no internet access (trust me DON"T TRY IT IF YOU LIKE NEW PROGRAMS!!!!)

I need a os that is good and stable and was wondering if debian would make it

Yep.

But after awhile of using etch you'll probably want new programs and go to lenny - then later you'll want newer programs and go to sid :)

Debian stable is pretty much the de facto standard for distro stability.

If you have a fast enough connection, you can always go for the netinstall. 180MB iso is always good. http://www.us.debian.org/CD/netinst/

Yeah, go with the net install cd. Or there are ever livecds you can download (not sure if the installer is on them yet or not). Anyway, Debian's servers are crap-tons faster than Ubuntu's, so you can install Debian in a very, very short amount of time using the net install cd.

And if you really have no net connection and want a nice desktop install OOTB, you don't need to download the 21 CDs either. Just the first one is enough, the other ones only contain additional packages.

If you do not have an internet connection, like myself, goto http://www.thelinuxstore.ca/ where you can get dvd sets, which have the repositories for Ubuntu Feisty, and others, on a disk.
