This was just too cool:

Earliest color photo from 1872. Then some from the early 20th century, including WWI all the way up to WWII.

I don't ever remember reading/or learning about color photography from that long ago in any of my art/photography/history classes.

actually, its older than that. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Colour_photograph

1861 was the first permanent colour photograph by james clerk maxwell.

there were some colour photos earlier but they either weren't permanent and faded to white or have been lost.

+1
I fully agree these are stunning! Really brings everything to life, especially the WWI pictures in the trench, that somehow really hit me as "these were real people"!

There are colour pictures of the American Civil War, I saw them once.

They were legitimate, I read an article about them. The color is not 32 bit, so to speak, but they are colour photos that used a similar process as later colour photographs.

They were from 1860s, after colour photographs were first made.

In the Russian photos I thought it was interesting that not one of the subjects is smiling. The photos are beautiful.

Just what I was about to post. I remember because it was a picture of the day a couple months ago.
