hi, i don't want to start a big debate about the issue, but would like to know if you are an ex-suse, or xandros user, who has decided to now use ubuntu as a direct consequence of novell and xandros signing pacts with ms, so therefore, ubuntu is gaining users?:D

Woha, I took all the major distributions and look how Ubuntu lifts off in the end:

Hype. Mark had buckets full of money to burn. He used the PR machine & he gave the cds away for free.

Ubuntu was nothing special when it started to be honest. Eventually it reached critical mass and the rst is history.

Those two links are awesome. I guess we really are getting some extra notability. I hope that translates into actually users though... Yay for Ubuntu anyway :).

Based on the number of discussion boards I visit, when the topic of open source OS's comes up, Ubuntu seems to be the flavor of the moment. I can recall times when it was Red Hat, then Suse, then...

Please be _VERY_ careful with google trends... it does not really explain anything.

You can make it tell you what you want to hear.

It only shows the 'trends'. An example of what it is good at (http://www.google.com/trends?q=hoary%2C+breezy%2C+dapper%2C+edgy%2C+feis ty&ctab=0&geo=all&date=all&sort=0).

That Ubuntu release comparison trend isn't accurate... "edgy" and "feisty" are a lot more common words to be found in other sites than the rest, IMO.

And if you compare Ubuntu and OS X, you'll see Ubuntu way ahead.. Try ubuntu, mac , ubuntu, macintosh , or ubuntu, apple ... I don't think people really associate Macintosh's OS X like PCs with Windows.

I'm just looking at the 'trend'. I know it's not accurate.

I can't really speak about gaining users from other distro's with any real hard facts, What I

do know is the since I started using Ubuntu in May of 2005, it has really been on the upswing.

With each new release the forums have grown significantly. If I remember correctly, in 2005

when I use to sign in, there might be 100 members and 300 non members on forum. Now,

if there is less than 4000 total online I am surprised. Also we had no such animals as 3rd

party links or loco teams. Sorry this is not on topic, but must talk up Ubuntu when I am

able. :)

thanks for the replies, and links:D

i know ubuntu is gaining in popularity all the time, just wondered really, if part of that gain was due to the ms deals of some distros,

good to know, though, that ubuntu is going from strength to strength:D

don't be silly, vista is a latin word for view or scene, be more specific/ why do you think there are results before windows vista name was even thought of.

Never compare Microsoft, Windows, Vista, or XP with Ubuntu. That will NEVER work. The mere fact that 90% of the world is Microsoft means that 90% of the queries will be made about M$ products or M$ itself. Thus, an obvious advantage on the "trends."

(Do, however, notice the extreme downward trend after Vista was released toward the end of that trend map.)

I agree if you're talking about news references (the lower graph). However, the upper graph is about what people are searching for, not about how common the word is on the web. I assume that not many people (relatively speaking) search for "edgy" and "feisty". You can treat this as 'background noise' that remains relatively stable. Everything that goes above that stable level is probably ubuntu-related. Just to prove my point, I checked "nano", a term that is arguably generic and becomes more important over times through nanotechnology:

http://www.google.com/trends?q=ipod+nano%2C+nano

The lines are almost congruent, especially on the upper graph. What level of detail you use is most important if you want to get a specific result in a comparison:
