View Full Version : Recommend music from your country

I think it's a good idea to recommend musicians (non international stars, everybody knows them) from your country, and a brief description of them.
From Spain:
Ojos de brujo: flamenco-hiphop fusion
Gerardo Núńez: flamenco-jazz guitarist
Ofunkillo: funk
Marlango: pop-soul-jazz
Buika: flamenco-soul

I have always liked listening to foreign-speaking hip-hop so I`ll recommend to you a local hip-hop-rap star: Edo Maajka...

He is really good...

Opgezwolle, from the netherlands, but I don't think I would like them if I couldn't understand them.

Pete philley is also good and he makes English music.

Do you have any links to some mp3-s from this Opgezwolle guy, I very much like to listen to some hip-hop that I dont understand...?

The movie "Crossing the Bridge: The Sound of İstanbul (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0459242/)" can be a good way to dive into recent Turkish music.

This list is intentionally jumbled in terms of genre and generation, and is pretty much off the top of my head; I can point to more artists if there's interest, and/or answer any questions you may have about the above artists. You can find lots of their recordings on Youtube, MySpace and the like.

From Italy I'd advise:

Fabrizio De Andrč
Francesco De Gregori
Lucio Dalla
Vasco Rossi (not the recent ones, though)
Franco Battiato
Lucio Battisti

For most of them, though, (especially the first two) the lyrics are a really relevant part of the songs, so if you cannot understand italian probably you won't like them.

As for the genre, I'd have some difficulties, since all except Vasco Rossi and Franco Battiato play I kind of music for which I don't have a name, nor international analogues. I think I could say they mostly do ballads, a bit like Bruce Springsteen or Cat Stevens but I'm not sure the paragon is fit. Vasco Rossi is a rocker, while Franco Battiato makes some kind of eclectic pop.

wow great list meg25, you really have a nice taste on music

mustafa özkent's album is available on some international stores as well: http://www.boomkat.com/item.cfm?id=24586 (finders keepers also re-pressed selda bağcan's legendery album "selda" http://www.boomkat.com/item.cfm?id=24477. great tunes, if you like psychodelic - funky tunes also great structure for electronic music. well, bülent arel & ilhan mimaroğlu are real pioneers in music.

nekropsi, babazula & replikas's first album are great tunes with their eclectic style. i can add "zen" to meg35's list (http://www.myspace.com/zenistanbul)

well for last i would like to recommend onu özer (onur oezer) but he is pretty well known.... he is dynamo of vakant records. great minimal techno tunes.

and also you can check DDR, they have nice sound. http://www.myspace.com/dogualmanya

You know... this is actually kind of sad, I can't think of one group (modern) I would want to list. Most of the music I listen to can only be found on the euro charts. Many of the artists I respect are all has-been artists of yesteryears.

Name me 1 good American modern day techno artist who's main method of music creation is not mixing/mashing. I still remember the day I met Rich Hall back in 87 (a.k.a. Moby); he could really spin some trax... still have his autograph around here somewhere on an old 45 sleeve.

From the Neitherlands:
Spinvis (http://www.spinvis.nl/) - bedroom techy gone big. His sound lies somewhere between triphop and lo-fi rock (with a hi-fi edge) and is pretty melancholy.
De Kift (http://www.dekift.nl/) - Hard to describe, it's somewhere between the town fanfare and punk with Brecht/Weillian overtones. Fantastic live act. It's a family affair, too- two brothers and their dad are in the band, mom does merchandise. Think Arcade Fire with more brass and less rock.
The Ex (http://www.theex.nl/) - Internationally acclaimed ex-punkband who make a wild racket that ranges from free jazz to international folk music. They're currently touring with a bunch of Ethiopian musicians.
There's tons more of course, but these three have a very distinct sound. Most other bands try to emulate the Anglo-American sound. Those aren't bad, but don't stand out as bands that are typically Dutch.
Oh, one rock oriented band should be mentioned: the pshychedelic organ rockers called zZz (http://soundofzzz.com/).

Yeah, reminds me of The ThrillKillKult with their punk rage set. Similar to the ska-funk scene of 83 but without the steel drums. They just need someone like Rob Zombie to come in and mastermind their final mix. Oh yeah, I've got to give props to the Information Society crew.
