>> Backyard?Nope, it's not political, religious or inappropiate for the Cafe.

The Backyard is intended for everything not related to Ubuntu or fitting for the Cafe. This could include discussions of religion, politics and other topics that would be inappropriate in the more technical areas of the Ubuntu Forums and that don't really fit the more whimsical, lighthearted nature of the Cafe.

Koi's are really beautiful,....and very sweet, I love how the will eat out of your hands.

The Rope Fish will also eat out of your hands and they love to be pet (held in your hands while in the water, while you pet them). Rope Fish are very affectionate.

My fish kept committing suicide while I was out of the house. I had a lid on the tank, but they were apparently jumping out at the opening for the power filter. The last one couldn't stand being without his friends, so he used the garbage disposal as a quick way out...

One of my Rope Fish committed suicide, I found him days later under my blue jeans as stiff as a bone. Rope Fish are known for being escape artist.

heh, they're not really commiting suicide, they're not just smart enough to know there's no water on the other side.

Years ago I used to have some aquariums, but unfortunately I had to get rid of them after a move. I had a lot of cichlids, most memorable probably were the Oscars. I had some really aggressive fish that I had to give away, they were Jack Dempseys. I also had a piranha - they are not aggressive.

>> Backyard?The Cafe is appropriate.

I used to have a large Jack Dempsey (about 8-10" in length) that would jump out of the water to eat from my hand. That was cool. He died while I was on a trip and someone else was watching the house. I don't have an aquarium at the moment.

My favorite is probably the Cardinal Tetra (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cardinal_tetra).
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/2/27/Cardinal_tetra2_crop.jpg/250px-Cardinal_tetra2_crop.jpg

We had about 20 of these little guys. Normally their lifespan is just a single year in nature. Maybe 3 in captivity. Yet ours are doing so well they're almost 6-7 years by know. Pretty amazing, I wonder if we might have broken some records.

My worst is prolly the Emperor Tetra. An absolute nightmare.
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/b/bc/Kaisertetra.jpg/300px-Kaisertetra.jpg
We had an aquarium full of different Tetra fish and several other branches. Only a few Emperors. After a while these guys began breeding like crazy. 10, 20, 30.... we ended with about 60 maybe 80 of these fish.
It wasn't long before a plague broke out and wiped out the entire population and took most of the other fish along with it. So we ended up with a few Cardinals. :)

None at the moment:(

My last tank was dwarf cichlids, tetras and miniature cories. It went when I extended my office into a studio. A friend has offered me a four foot tank and I'm tempted to set up an "Amano" style planted tank with tetras and pencil fish.

I have kept african cichlids, killifish and Australian natives and even had several lungfish when I was in my teens.

The cool thing about Rope Fish is they can live outside of the water for about 10 hours, they have rudimentary lungs.

Unfortunately, I found my Rope Fish too late, I think it must have been a couple of days atleast.

The king of freshwater tropical fishes was the Discus, or so it seemed to me way back in my childhood when I had a tank...But geez they cost an arm and a leg and you needed a big tank to boot. (I remember being amused at the time reading about the lengths some enthusiasts went to get these prized fish to mate in captivity). Had a couple of Pearl (?) Gouramis, which are neat in that they need to breath air and you can actually 'pet' them (but alas they are veyr territorial and so ended up bullying all the other fish)...They are quite elegant with their long, trailing tenticle-like abdominal fins...Angel fish are rather striking too, but with all that fin area comes rot...I remember at the time coming to the conclusion that a couple of each species was a bad idea and that I should have just gotten a school of neon tetras or something. They look pretty sharp.

Now, if I were to get another aquarium I think I'd go saltwater and maybe just clownfish and sea anemones. Or rather just some brightly colored anemones and fans and grasses, because I can no longer stand to see exotic birds/rodents/fish confined to little cages/tanks until they die. It's not ethical to take them from their natural environments and coup them up for our selfish pleasure.

Indeed those are good points. However you could also see it this way: These fish already were born in captivity so they don't know any better. At least you can take good care of them and give them a good life in your aquarium (the same could apply to other animals).

Still that doesn't change the fact that it indeed isn't right to take an animal from it's natural environment.

We sometimes change the interior of the aquarium to give the fish some change. They actually do seem pretty happy when there's new stuff and the fact that our Cardinal Tetra (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cardinal_tetra) are seven to eight times their normal lifespan does show that they're happy and doing pretty well.

Yeah, the fish you buy in pet stores are bred in captivity. Speaking of plants, I did have some aquarium plants also for a while, but I wasn't really keen on things so the fish I had tore them up as if they were in the way, or just to amuse themselves it seems.

Nearly 85% of the marine clown fish (nemos) now sold and exported from Australia are bred in captivity.

Collection of rock (and anemones) from coral reefs is as big an environmental problem as depletion of the fish in many developing countries.

However, these industries are capable of being sustainably managed and create ongoing jobs in poorer coastal communities in places like the Philippines and South Pacific Islands. A well managed aquarium fish trade can replace totally unsustainable industries like shark finning. On a $/kg basis, wild caught aquarium fish can come-in at between $US750-$US1,000 compared to, say, long-line caught marlin, which fetches about $1.75/kg. at the pet food cannery.

Unfortunately, we (aquarium geeks in developed countries) seek out the cheapest fish - which are those that often come from places that use chemicals on reefs to stun and capture the fish en masse - and we get our "live rock" and anemones from the places where dynamite is used to break-up reefs.

I shall now go back to the Word Association thread and take my soapbox with me.

Those are very, very beautiful.

I no longer have any of my tanks. I started off with a 90x45x45cm fresh water aquarium but was always amazed by marines when I went to pet shops & a friend at work also had a few marine tanks.

One day may dad told me about someone trying to sell a 180x60c60cm (6x2x2foot) 650litre (170us gal) for real cheap which I bought. I had a 10cm square tubing frame made up which i had the neighbour who did wood work clad in lovely wood and make a tank hood out of the same wood. Inside of the hood was painted with a bright white waterproof epoxy. I built my onw 'reef' filtration system from plans I got on the net or in books, did all my own plumbing, electrics, lights etc.

I got filter sea water from the aquarium which they offered to registered marine hobbyist, once a month i would take 6x25l containers and will them in order to do 25% water changes, killed my back :) Got my coral sand and live rock from the pet shop and thats how I got started in marine which to me was a much more enjoyable experience than fresh water aquaria.

My favourite fish of all time was my Maroon Clown & I loved the cleaner shrip and how they 'serviced' all the fish. Was really relaxing to watch.

I had other priorities and sold my marine setup to the minister/reverent of my parents church.

I promised myself that I would have a BIG marine setup one day soemwhere in the future.

What i like about it is that they defend there territory but in a big enough tank they almost don't fight that much only if they come on each other territory.

To much fights are a sign that the tank is to small for them and they need a bigger tank. To much fights is indeed to much stress what can kill the other fish to.

I love marine fish but haven't the time nor money to maintain a tank anymore... as it is, there's a 29gal tank in the garage with a very fat crayfish and a molly in it.

At one time I had a 270gal marine tank. My best and favorites were a snowflake eel and a four-foot blue ribbon eel. The blue ribbon jumped out of the tank and died when the heater malfunctioned and cooked nearly all the fish in the tank. :(

One of my favorite fish was my fresh water dwarf puffer. It wasn't much bigger than a pencil eraser, but it didn't have any problem breaking a snail shell open and eating the snail. They float around slowly until they come to their prey. Then they dart at it like a battering ram.

It wasn't really aggressive toward my other fish, though.

If I had more money and time I would get a saltwater aquarium and get some trigger fish. :)I used to be an aquarist intern at a small science center in New Hampshire, and we had a fairly large gray triggerfish that had been caught in a lobster trap in the Gulf of Maine (came up the Gulf Stream, and followed a warm-water eddy into the GoM). It was so aggressive that I needed to bribe it with treats if I needed to clean its tank (and if I wanted to keep my knuckles intact). If I didn't give it what it wanted, it would flick water at me with it's second dorsal fin

Rope fish (bichirs) are a really neat (and old) lineage of fishes. Pipefish (family Sygnathidae) also make great aquarium fish, as long as you have the right food for them. They look amazing in a tank with lots of grass for them to hide in. I'm always partial to gobies as well, but that's probably because I'm working on them for my dissertation.

For a possible source of pictures, as well as information, try Fishbase (http://www.fishbase.org).
