My microphone is too weak

Hi there!
I have a notebook but when I speak in Skype the other side can barely hear me. The microphone seems to be very insensitive. I tried a headset - the same story.
I am thinking of buying separate microphone. Is there such thing? On USB? Help me.

right click on the volume control applet, and choose "open volume control"
Go to edit, choose preferences
Mark on "Mic boost (20db) and close this window
Now you should have a tab called "switches" on the volume control window. go to this tab.
Activate Mic boost (+20db)

Windows too has an option called microphone boost. I can't give you step by step instructions since i don't have windows, but it's somewhere inside volume control window. Advanced, or preferences, or something.
