I am really interested in Fluxbuntu, but, since I would install it on an old pc, I need a stable release and i don't like DSL and other distros, I want an ubuntu in there.

I tried to install ubuntu and then fluxbox, but i don't like what i have done, I think it is better to install a lighter distro directly.

Last release was a build, released in sept. 2006, do you have any news about it?

It's about time.

Best to ask in IRC or ak the Devs, http://fluxbuntu.org/en/node/4

you could always install server and then install fluxbox.. that way you don't have all the gnome stuff to deal with

Why do you need an "official release" ? Fluxbox is in the official Ubuntu repositories, isn't that enough ?

I did install Fluxbuntu a while back on an older computer of mine. Even though it's not an official release, it does work quite well, I never encountered any problems. Though if you still were looking for something a bit more refined (for lack of a better term), matthinckley's advice would be the best. Installing the Ubuntu Server version is light, and then you can simply install fluxbox that way, it will give you something bare bones that should work quite well.

I was just looking at the Fluxbuntu community and it seems they are working on some "hard bugs". No firm release date that I can see.

What are the specs of your old PC, just out of curiosity?

I use the Ubuntu server + Fluxbox and it's great. I would recommend that. It's a very lightweight system, and you get to add all of your own lightweight applications rather than having a bunch of programs installed that you may never use.

Here is one guide that might be of help:

Fluxbuntu comes with a lot of lightweight applications so it's easier for some users to install that instead of installing Ubuntu server + Fluxbox and then manually installing a whole bunch of applications.

I know but I would like it to be already set, because I installed fluxbox but when I try to customize it (menu and other stuff), it always crashes, don't know why.

Anyway I will try this way thanks

For me, Fluxbox has been rock-solid. If you have trouble customizing it, don't hesitate to ask questions. There are many avid Fluxbox users on ubuntuforums who can help you. The links in my sig might be of some help to you as well.

Good luck with the server install. :)

that'd be fab. i'd love to use fluxbox., i like the feel of fluxbox.

still, i'm not a power user and i do fear the configuration as i'm also not granted much time to play around with my computer....

rather than bothering other busy users, do you know a few good howtos or presets that one can use?

While Fluxbox is not "for power users only", it is one of those things in life where you get out of it what you put into it. You have to learn how to configure it, but it isn't that hard for most things. You just have to do some research/reading.

You can certainly use it "as is" if you don't have much free time, but eventually you will start thinking of ways you'd like to customize it to suit your own tastes and work habits.

The manpages for fluxbox and fluxstyle are worth reading:

man fluxbox
man fluxstyleI had to trim my signature a bit, but here are some links that are generally useful.

http://fluxbox-wiki.org
http://fluxbox.org (http://fluxbox-org)

http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=483613

On top of that, a lot of questions have been asked and answered on ubuntuforums, so it's often a matter of searching the forums. As usual, Google can help as well.

As I mentioned above (on June 8th! :)), if you can't find an answer to a question about Fluxbox, just ask.
