Here are screenshots of base models for the same model of laptop; one with windows vista home, and one with ubuntu. It appears you're getting a deal by going with ubuntu, and frankly, you should. Now check out the builds with comparable specs, the only difference being the video card. It appears that the base model with ubuntu comes with (mostly) crummy intel integrated video. Once you upgrade it to the comparable Nvidia model it doesn't look so great. And, to top it off, the base model with ubuntu comes standard with HALF the ram.

The Intel card is there for a reason. They have open source drivers and work very well with Compiz. No weird glitches.

Certainly, but the price should reflect the cost.

How do you know it doesnt .

making a special build will have additional costs for Dell . There is also the recoup of set up costs.

Also the Intel integrated graphics are fine if you dont intend to play High end games. They are not 'crummy" as posted in post #1

I'm just saying that it's slightly deceptive since Linux is free, and requires a trivial amount of extra effort to set up over windows (especially with Ubuntu).

Not really. Or at least not in my experience. Set up usually is minimal. Personally, I don't care what is on my system when I buy it. I will install what I need. As long as I save money by avoiding windows.

Great, I'll sell you an old PII computer w/Ubuntu for $50K.

No one said unpopular choices would be easy or cheaper.

I'd buy one simply because to buy one with windows on it would be against my principles; thus windows vista isn't an option.

If I had 50 bucks, I'd take you up on that. It's what I sold my old PII for, and I miss it terribly. This isn't about money. It's much bigger than that. We need to stop revering gold so much, and start worrying about other things.

Yep, he sure did. Missed that K completely! Wish I'd sold my old PII for 50K. I wouldn't mis it so much, then.

It's still not all about money, though!! :D
