A friends PC seems to be infected with some form of malware that propagates via skype. Skype automatically sends other users a "Check this out!" message with a url attached that links to a .pif file.

Just a heads up incase you are using Windows.

Being binary-only and proprietary, I consider Skype spyware/malware in of itself. Who knows what it listens to and what it broadcasts? I don't know why anyone would trust their communications with such software...

I dunno but he has a very valid point. Skype is VERY closed, from the code to the protocols used.

Unfortunately I have not come across a viable alternative yet although I have tried many.

I'm in the same boat. I've tried many alternatives but the fact is that everyone I know uses skype so I can't get away from it.

What do you think about the gizmo project (http://www.gizmoproject.com)? It seems like a good alternative to me but first I need to get all my family and friends to switch to it as well :(

No. I'm a clinical perfusionist. Among other things, I run a heart-lung machine during cardiac surgery.

Wengophone?

Out of the lot it is the one I like most. I have had it installed several times but I just don't get the same voice quality. the other problem offcourse is trying to convince people you know on skype to switch.

Their website also annoys the hell out of me. Dunno how many times I have opened the english site and when I click on a link it opens up a French page which would be fine if I could actually read French.

You can see what skype is sending/doing. Though only by some very clever programming.
