View Full Version : So I got a new system76 laptop...

Dual core, 2 gigs of ram, 60 gig hard-drive.

Pretty swanky.

One problem. The sucker decides to 'freeze' one me at random moments. Thoughts? Hardware problem? Software problem? Gnome/Linux kernel problem?

One more thing. The right-hand bottom side of the laptop (where my right-wrist rests) becomes warm, quite warm. Anyone know why? Anyone had a problem like this? And not just with system76 laptops, but other laptops as well?

I've used desktops for a few years now, so I don't remember the 'feel' of how they ran.

One more thing, anyone know where I can find some 1440x900 wallpapers? The screen is very wide.

Anime themes are always a plus ^_^ .

Weird.

My computer decided to spontaneously reboot.

Didn't click anything, didn't hit the power button.

Anyone have this problem?

Use GIMP to crop and resize 1600x1200 backgrounds

Uh.... I dunno, thats not really a good sign the comp freezing randomly. I'm pretty sure its not hardware... easy way to check is boot up the computer in a live CD and play around with it for however long it takes to get it to freeze usually. I guess I'd just back whatever's important up and reinstall, could just be a small error or other problem in the installation.

Uh, as for the bottom of the labtop, I assume that is either the large battery or some other major piece of circuitry that is running hot.

Oh and no, I don't know any good sites for 1440 X 900 anime wallpapers. Two suggestions:

1) Go to google images and search for "Wallpaper anime 1440" I got quite a few hits like that, or change anime for the one you want.

2) Find a really large anime dedicated site and see if they offer/have a dedicated section for that size.

1440 X 900 a bit of an odd format, I don't know too many people with it >.>.

Edit: Thinkbuntu's idea works too for backgrounds... you may find more of that size.

You may be having the same problem I was having with my shafetech laptop. I had to flash new firmware to the CD-RW/DVD-R drive to fix it. It's due to a problem with a specific kind of TSSTcorp drive which is in some of these laptops.

Wow, new one to me, I never thought an optical drive could destabilize a system... shouldn't 76 have known about that though?

That's a difficult one.

It seems like it's a software problem, not hardware.

I'm sure that they test the system for some time before they ship it out, but this is a problem that happens after operating the laptop for some time (nothing instant.)

They need to get an ordered computer out to the customer within a reasonable amount of time, so they can't really test for something like this.

Admittedly, I haven't waited very long in order for the computer to become responsive again.

Looks like I'll need to get a good kernel debugger :) .

System76's install of Ubuntu was crappy from the last time I could tell, something about it was just slow and unstable. Install Ubuntu from a normal install CD and it should solve most of your problems.

As for the heat, I have a System76 laptop and it hasn't heated up on me once yet. So I'd contact System76 technical support and ask them about it, it doesn't sound too good.

Seems like a good thing to do. I wouldn't want to have my laptop become like that Mac laptop that asploded :s .

Somehow I don't expect system76 to stay in business for long since dell came out with their own Linux derivatives :) .

Just a hunch.

They have a support forum here, http://ubuntuforums.org/forumdisplay.php?f=158

You can take it up with them over there.

here is a link with only 1440x900 widescreen wallpapers (http://www.ewallpapers.eu/search_size/1440-x-900-wide) , hope this will help in choosing your favarite wallpaper:)

Maybe I'm just being obvious here, but as wolfen69 said perhaps the heat/freeze/reboot issues are concomitant; make sure you don't cover any venting slots with your right hand (or any other way, for that matter)...

You posted on the wrong forum. As someone pointed out System76 has its own subforum here. Your freeze is probably CD-drive related, as it was on many models from System76: here is the fix for the Darter:

https://bugs.launchpad.net/system76/+bug/117441

When you have problems with your computer you should really contact them: hey are patient and helpful.
