Hello,

Just made the switch from XP to Ubuntu. Great experience so far! Though I do miss some Win apps.

One of them is Advanced File Organizer, which I used to catalog my extensive number of backup DVDs. When I wanted a specific file in this DVD jungle, I just searched on AFO's database, it would then tell me on which DVD the file was, I would then pick up this DVD on the case and get the file.

Is there any OSS that has a similar funcionality? If not, has anyone ever tried running AFO under wine ?

Thanks in advance,

Marcelo.

Sounds like you're looking for Beagle (http://beagle-project.org/). It indexes the contents of your home folder (and I think folders symlinked to it) for easy searching.

It also integrates with a number of apps such as Gaim/Pidgin IM, Evolution Mail, F-Spot Photo orgasiser and Firefox (sudo apt-get install mozilla-beagle).

It's available in Synaptic or sudo apt-get install beagle. Give it a go :)

Here's a link I found to a similar discussion...

Not sure if it will help. Let us know how it turns out.

Thank you for the replies.

happy-and-lost: Beagle seems really interesting, however, from what I understand, it couldn't be used to catalog dvd's (or any other removable media - correct me if I'm wrong!).

I will see if I can manage to run AFO under wine, if not, I will take a look at the alternatives diggity suggested.

Thanks,

Marcelo.

If you don't find anything, that really would be a nice program to have made. I hope you find something, though, because I don't know anybody personally who would make it.

i have been searching for a program similar to this as well --i have tried gcstar and griffith (of the 2 i think gcstar is better) but it feels like it is designed for non-file media collections like dvd's or cd's rather than avi's or mp3's.

it would be awesome if a program similar to gcstar existed but instead of having to manually insert the info the app should just monitor a folder for new content or even rescan a folder for new content when told; similar to have music managers scan a music folder for new stuff.

so, believe it or not but gthumb is a great alternative...
it shows all the media in a given folder, in a clean organized way, with a thumbnail and the metadata and it is searchable.

amazing!

it doesn't have any bells or whistles and if you want the movie info you will have to get it the old-fashioned way --go to imdb and search for it.
