Has anyone else noticed that if you click and hold on a sound file you hear a preview of that sound? I've noticed that only *.wav and *.ogg work... not sure how to get mp3s to work (if you do lemme know).
Am I really awesome for discovering this cool little feature... or am I really late hoping on this bandwagon?

I had no idea.... are you running feisty??? I do not have any .ogg or .wav on my system I do not believe so I will not be able to test it.. I'd love to hear if someone else has....

Holy Cow... It does work for me with .mp3s as well!! Except I do not click the files.. I just hover the mouse over them, and they eventually start playing.. this works in Dapper as I had mentioned I am running it.

This used to work for me in Dapper. I only needed to hover over music files (even .mp3's). In feisty, I can't get it to work anymore :(. Of course Edit -> Preferences -> Preview -> Sound Files is set to Always, but it still doesn't work. Not even for .ogg files :(.

i think you need to install package:
mpg123 or
mpg321 <-- this one is a free implementation of the above me thinks

Um, that's a really old feature that's been in various distros of linux for quite a while now. But yes, you can also just point at them, you don't have to hold. I think the idea was that "if images and movies have a thumbnail, why shouldn't a sound file!" but there are lots of plugins to get to be able to play all files, including mp3. I've got all of them, so here's a list:
Gstreamer series:
-Gstreamer extra plugins
-Gstreamer ffmpeg video plugin
-Gstreamer plugins for mms, wavpack, quicktim, musepack
-Gstreamer plugins for aac, xvid, mpeg2, faad
Xine series:
-Xine extra plugins
Get all those and you can play anything!

I can easily play all kinds of music & video, with any player, Rythmbox or anything, so I have all the plugins I need. But it still doesn't work :(. Funny thing is, when I was on Dapper, I couldn't get Rythmbox to play mp3's, but I could listen to samples from nautilus :|

Znupi, install mpg321 for mp3 preview and vorbis-tools for ogg preview.
