I just wondered if there is a free and open source (FOSS) alternative to flash.

Ummm, GNU Gnash I think thats what its called... I think it implements everything version 7 does. Google it though, I'm not certain how complete it is.

Isn't Gnash just used to stimulate Flash in Linux? I was asking for a FOSS alternative which can replace Flash, not run it.

Correct me if I'm wrong.

Ummm, truth is if you want all the functionality, then you prolly can't avoid installing flash. Just like you can't avoid installing proprietary drivers if you want to do anything intensive with your card (Game, beryl, other renderings...).

Heres wiki on Gnash. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gnash) I do think their aiming at trying to replace flash. I don't know if it will ever completely be finished >.>.

Then there's swfdec (http://swfdec.freedesktop.org/wiki/) but I'm not sure how usable that is right now.

it can play youtube videos now. Not the version in the repos though, but the unstable version from the website.

Guys, I'm pretty sure he's asking for alternatives to Adobe Flash, not the Flash Player.

Here's one, conveniently named Flash 4 Linux (http://f4l.sourceforge.net/). Though I think development has stopped.

And the only other one I know of is KToon (http://ktoon.toonka.com/), but I don't know if it's mainly for Flash files or not...

Ah the editor; well I'd like to develop a tool for svg animation which could be converted into flash (possible) but TMINIT

HTML5 with a WYSIWYG editor? Ha, not in a million years.
