Is the keyboard shortcut for entering the setup the same in all/most motherboards? Or does it vary for each manufacturer?

it can vary. So far, I already came across F8, F10 en Del

Boot it should mention it during boot.

On my little old Armada 3500 accessing the BIOS requires using the software on a hidden partition that Compaq put on the harddrive but which is ever so easily overwritten by installing xubuntu or similar.

To access the BIOS I now need to boot to a floppy with the BIOS gui etc on it.

You have no idea how annoying it was discovering this and then having to hunt down the correct software etc.

yes, I know what it is for my computer, I was just wondering how much it varied. Thanks for the reply.

I've also seen F1, F2, and ESC for some nonstandard OEM bios. I've heard of the partition bios, but never had to use it.

On a compaq desktop, I have seen F12. You had to tap it furiously and contiuously just as you pressed the power button and up until the setup screen appeared or else it would not take.
