Are you the only Desktop Linux user you know? Chime in and if so, let us know your thoughts and feelings about it. Do you wish more people you knew used it? Do you enjoy being the only one? Etc...

I, myself, am not the only person I know. However, I kinda wish more friends, family, and colleagues were using it. It'd be nice to share and work with more folks I actually know.

I, my wife, and my good friend Dale use Linux. That's 3!

Nope, but I used to be. When I was in college a lot of people said they thought linux was cool but they never ran it. It was a bit frustrating, because its just one part of your life that you just didn't have anyone to talk to about. But as linux is becoming more popular, I'm sure it'll be a problem of the past ;-)

I’m the only one i know that use linux. I just did the transfer from Vista to Ubuntu feisty, but i cant trow Vista away yet :P. Why, that’s because not everything works on Ubuntu….yet! And a lot of people I know, don’t know what an Operating System is :P, they only know Window. So for them, I think it’s not necessary to take the jump to linux yet! But yeah, I wish they used it :):)

I know two more here in the lab I work: one is also a phd student like myself, the other one is part of the IT department at our university. I think though, there are a lot more of them that I do not know about...

I'm a student so (naturally) everybody at my university uses Linux or Unix. We've got Debian, Minix and Solaris (personally I hate the last two). Although these are only public computers, I only know one other student who sometimes uses a Xubuntu live cd.
I also know Andy Tanenbaum who also works at my university (the guy from the Linus vs. Tanenbaum debate (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tanenbaum-Torvalds_debate) and the one who made Minix) he apparently uses Debian sometimes. He also convinced me to switch to Unix/Linux after a long debate.

Besides them I converted/forced my family to Ubuntu, so that makes 5 Linux users I personally know.

My dad uses linux, but only at work, and my brother uses linux, but he lives hundreds of miles away, so it kind of feels like I am the only one I know that uses linux. Since I installed Ubuntu over XP on my laptop a couple weeks ago, I have been so happy with it that I can't shut up about it. So, it would be great to know more linux users so I could talk to more people that don't mind me babbling about it all the time, or at least understand what I am talking about.

I've got myself of course, and i've converted 3 friends and 2 thinking about it... but i always tell them that if they aren't willing to learn not to jump over.... my friends are lazy and if i help them once they expect me to be their personal pc tech specialist.. it gets annoying

I was until recently.
I work at the "Tender Centre" which is basically an auction house (but not really).
Anyway, from time to time we get a few computers come in, and when people ask about our computers, I try to slip in that I use Linux.
One guy I was talking to told me that he builds computers and that a lot of people have been asking him about alternative OS's due to Vista.
So for the past few weeks I've been going over to his place and giving him Linux tutorials.
Good to finally have someone to talk linux with (though ubuntuforums.org is the next best thing ;) ).

Ubuntu in its various flavors is recommended for our C programming course at my university and a Linux environment is required for that course. Many of those students continue to use it after the course as their main development environment.

I was until today. My cousin was over and saw my computer and asked me what the hell was that. So I started showing him. It was perfect timing. His XP install had bonked and he was sick of it. He took my Ubuntu CD home with him after I told him he could run it without installing it to try it out. I told him to take it slow to minimize the shock of swithching, but he said to hell with it and went all out. When I got home from work I im'ed him to see if he liked it. He already had it installed, his im accounts set up, music and videos playing, ATI card(X300) working, and wireless card configured. Not bad for someone who had never really even seen Linux before 10 o'clock this morning. He said he loves it. So I guess we might have another Ubuntu success story.

*confused* i'm apart of a quite a few linux community forums therefore i know quite a lot of linux users.... scratches head.

I'm apart of a local lug in jamaica Jalug (http://jalug.org) So i know quite a few of the linux users in my country. and in my immediate social circles I'ld say about 10 or more run linux. The majority being ubuntu, a few still on suse and fedora.

i'm the only linux user amongst friends and family. I've yet to come across a work environment that uses linux, as one of my former project directors has said, its all about image, they want to be seen doing business with other big companies like M$.

I don't bother preaching linux these days, linux sells itself with the choices of what to do with it.

A debian user friend of mine recommended Ubuntu ,that's how I got here
apart from him , I know another guy who uses Ubuntu (I recommended) and I know another who tried Ubuntu but uses a mac .
But I don't know any Linux users where I live . Though there should be many cause Shanghai is a big city...

EDIT- forgot, my wife is a Linux user

Does the fact I installed Edubuntu on the kid's computers count as knowing somebody who uses Linux since they don't have a choice ;) ? My wife, though, uses Windows.

I have a co-worker who is (was) a BSD guy but is now into Macs, and the person who started me out on Linux is trying to find a good distro for him, but he's a fair distance away from me so I only see him once-in-a-while.

Otherwise, most of the other people I know don't "use" linux as much as "dabble" (usually via virtualizing and only touching it during Linux SIG meetings every month.)

So I "feel" like the only Linux user.

Living in Arlington, there are quite a few I encounter who use Linux, especially at my coffee shop, although it's usually with a bland incarnation of KDE. I think that I'm the only one who does everything in Linux though. I only use my MacBook for internet (awesome wireless card) and using other people's Dreamweaver templates. And of course, I use Windows at the office, but that's not my choice.

Well , I'm from Belgium , live in a small town , and I'm working in a fabrik... yes , I'm the only Linux user ;-)

I don't even want to install it on my colleagues computers , ( wich I've setup ) , because I think they would call me any day to solve 'problems'.

I have a feeling that the difference between Linux and Windows is that Linux is as simple as it must be.
Windows is for kids who wants to send 'buzzers' while they chat .
This can sound a bit cruel , but I can't imagine my 18 year old son and all his friends like Ubuntu.
They want the many whistles and bells from Windows , I'm not.
If I chat ( wich I don't ) , I want to send text to somebody , that's all.

I é-mail , surf the internet , download files , listen music , look videos ... all in Ubuntu.
The main reason that I've switched to Linux , is the security reason , and I'm glad I did.

I only use Windows for video editing , and for all my minidisc needs , and that's it !

I've met the Bangkok Ubuntu community recently so it ames a big bunch of people who uses Linux.
I've even met one guy from canonical here.

But, by people I know, I think it's more close relationship. And in this close relationship, there are none...

However, recently, I've had 2 friends' friend coming at my place and at some point, I showed something on my PC.

They started using it, not even noticing the difference. I told them that they were using Linux right now.

They never saw it before.

They have been impressed by:

Speed of execution
Amount of applications featuring on the PC
Easiness of installation of new application (just a browse in the repository)
Customization of the GUI.

For the rest of the people I know, when I mentionned it as an alternative in the office, one of my developer collegues jumped out of her starting blocks saying that "Noooo! You can't offer that to someone. It's too complexe to handle." She was using Rad Hat at her previous job...

I was really pissed off about her reaction, because it was giving such a bad image to the ubuntu distro included.

I've handed her a CD of Ubuntu to try at home. But she's thai. I'm pretty sure she haven't done the effort.
I hope I'm wrong though. I'll know when I'll be back in Thailand in one week.

I do have some people in my school(2 of them in fact) that run Linux. But they only run it as a toy to play with and not their main system probably due to the slow internet we have here at the moment.

Well I originally had to install Linux for a class I was taking (today's the last day) so most of the students in the class have it installed (some chose to just bum off of others because they were too scared to install it on their systems), so I know a few others who use Linux. That said, I am not sure if they plan on really using it past this class. Other than that, nope.

My brother saw me using it on my laptop and desktop. He bought himself a laptop yesterday, fully installed with vista. First thing he's doing is wiping vista off of it. He said he doesn't want that &@$* on it. Then he asked me for a copy of ubuntu so he can install it. He, and i, am very impressed with it. I don't use windows anymore, looks like he isn't going to either.

No, I'm not. There's my wife -- but our computer has Ubuntu and no XP, that's the way I installed it; my stepson, and my stepdaughter, both of whom got Ubuntu installed by me. And my friend Joe Monzo in San Diego.

Dad, stepmother, brother, two sisters uses Kubuntu and Puppy at home (about 300 km away from my home). I had to write script to provide same functionality for email + photos resize combination as in Windows. No complaints after that.
Also my brother's friend is interted in Linux and asked me to install it on his laptop (it's going to happen very soon).
My friend was also very excited about Kubuntu but we didin't have any backup media at the time so nothing happened. But i think it will happen (I gave him livecd tough).

Linux usage isn't at all uncommon in the circles I frequent; at least a dozen people I meet regularly use it. Every computer owner I know who genuinely cares about computing and takes it seriously either uses Linux, OSX or some proprietary *nix as their main OS. Not a single Windows user by choice.

Hey, why the sad face my friend? Regardless of who had the idea, we all have the opportunity to both participate in, and enjoy, the fruit it bears. ;)

So far, I've read every reply and I'm seeing that I'm not alone in some of the ways I have been, and currently am, experiencing this transition to Linux. In many ways, I've found everyone's replies both informative, and comforting. Please keep chiming in, as I'm certain I am not the only person who's interested in what you have to say. Thank you. :D

I'm quite lucky I suppose. I know a few people who use Linux on the desktop, and between us we're constantly trying to make converts!

We can be a bit annoying about it sometimes I suppose, but I really feel Linux is ready now for everyday desktop use commercially, and word ought to be spread dammit!
