In November 2006, Microsoft and Novell agreed to pursue a collaboration agreement that would make it easier for customers to achieve interoperability in their mixed IT environments. To further ensure interoperability, Microsoft and Novell also agreed to provide customers with patent coverage. The technical collaboration is focused on four areas:

1. Virtualization
2. Standards-based Systems Management
3. Directory and Identity Interoperability
4. Document Format Compatibility

Dell is excited to take part in this business collaboration. Customers expect technology vendors to put their needs in the forefront, and by partnering with Microsoft and Novell, Dell will simplify customers' IT operations by focusing on three things:

1. Interoperability workshops
2. Migration proof of concepts
3. Migration services

Red Hat to me, is not better than windows...

One of my collegue screamed when I proposed to someone to use Ubuntu, because it's Linux and she was using RH at her previous job.

So there's the licensing problem, the user friendliness problem...

I don't recommend it.

I'm actually quite pleased that Dell has announced to put Ubuntu on new machines. I just recently started using Ubuntu and Kubuntu, and I don't see myself stopping anytime soon.

Amen. For normal beings Ubuntu and SUSE are currently at the top, as per distrowatch in fact.

Red Hat is targeted at business and people who can afford to pay for support. Otherwise, there's CentOS and Fedora. IMHO, your colleague needs to try other distros and then come back to RHEL.

Actually, it's PCLinuxOS & Ubuntu. Personally, I don't like suse that much because of how much stuff has to be loaded at boot.

Their fixing that for Suse 10.3, so its also going to boot better, plus they are going to work on the package manager, so hopefully I see another speed increase

SUSE doesnt like my wireless card.... im not that advanced to manually compile madwifi wireless card support or whatever has to be done to get my wireless card to work, so that is one reason why im using ubuntu and not SUSE. its most likely because the madwifi drivers are binary (cause of legal reasons)....

Doesn't Dell own a big chunk of Red Hat or one of the other commercial distributions?

These current Suse and Redhat Dell computers cost the same as the exact configuration with Windows.
