In English, an otaku (plural usually otaku, since Japanese words are not pluralized using an "s") is a variety of geek (or an overly obsessed fanboy / fangirl) specializing in anime and manga. A simplistic English translation might be 'culture hermit'.

Sapo (http://www.ubuntuforums.org/member.php?userid=12926) recommended it, here it is.

Personally, I heart anime. I don't get to watch as much as I'd want to, but boy do I love it. It helps me get away from whatever is keeping me busy (mainly College ...). I love the way they boldly express things (big eyes .rock) and the whole I don't give a Spock (http://conal.net/pan/Gallery/Old/spock-out.gif) attitude.

So once more, let's use this thread to talk about our beloved anime (or hated, if that's you). And yet again, anime diverts my attention :D.

However in Japanese it means "social outcast" or "one with no life" (vaguely... I think it more fully means someone who is so caught up in something other, culturaly more important, parts of their life start to fail.. or they become a hermit completely. Not a good thing to call someone either way.)

I like a few animes...
Neon Genesis, Trigun, Hellsing... er... yea, I think that's it.

Well I recently wiped off my entire hard drive, keeping no backups at all, so I don't have anything other than the current Bleach episodes (the ONLY thing I miss is my Cowboy Bebop, that somehow I forgot until it was too late !).

But yeah, great way to ask for personal reviews. Sapo you have some animes I have wanted to acquire recently, but was a little scheptical, so I'll start off with you mate :D .

- Samurai Champloo. Some people love it, some people say it's just a PG rated not so good version of Rurouni Kenshin (no making fun of Battousai.. or else). Tell us what it really is :D.

- Full Metal ALchemist. I guess animenfo didn't really convince me. An alchemist that does what ? WHy is it so cool ?

- Hunter X Hunter. I have read that this one rocks, but I saw a glimpse of an episode and wasn't really turned on. ?

P.S. - Man, I have the phrase "So long, space cowboy" printed on my forehead.. I just can't forget it. I don't know why. Maybe it was because I watched Bebop in a single weekend (So got hooked). Some episodes were really touchy (last episodes looked a lot like Kenshin's last Ova were his girl dies) .. some really kick ass (like the 1st time we see Spike's sweet fighting foot work against the big tall black dude), but they all rock.

[Off-Topic] Yeah I just noticed myself. I don't really remember ever seeing teh "100% ubuntu" rank though..[/Off-Topic]

Here I go!

SAMURAI CHAMPLOO: Completed -- Coming from the guy who made Bebop, this anime screamed of an awesome style and was just plain cool. The first episode was probably one of the best, though some after were a bit boring. Still quite nice though.

GUNDAM SEED DESTINY: 36, really interesting, and haven't seen the old Gundam so it isn't repetetive or anything, at least for me. I can't wait for the next Saturday to come as soon as I finish an episode.

GANKUTSUOU: Completed -- An anime version of the Count of Monte Cristo.. pretty suspenseful and weird. Took a different approach on textures too.

BLEACH: 36, what can I say? A few cliches, sometimes cheesy, but just so damn fun to watch. It's just great. <3

FULL METAL ALCHEMIST: Completed -- Best anime ever created IMO. I absolutely loved this. Wonderful storyline, great characters, and a terrific ending. I believe this is a must-watch for any otaku.

GUNDAM SEED: Completed -- The preface to SEED Destiny. Another great series, very suspenseful and should keep you hooked and satisfied till the ending.

NARUTO: 103 -- What otaku hasn't seen this? Some complain of it's cliches and cheesyness, but this one, like Bleach, is just so much fun to watch. I really enjoy getting to the next Naruto episode. Lovely fights, great characters, and a suspenseful storyline too.

PARANOIA AGENT: Completed -- You can't be an otaku and not watch this. Created by the guy who did the Lain series, you KNOW this is going to be one hell of a ride. Incredibly weird, and will keep you mind-boggled endlessly till you reach the awesome ending.

COWBOY BEBOP: Completed -- An incredibly stylish and fun anime. You can't miss this one.

SPEED GRAPHER: 10 -- One of the most promising animes of the new season. A new take on characters and a plot, and suspenseful as well. You'll really like this one, no matter what. It's just plain cool.

WOLFS RAIN: 11 -- I picked this up as I hadn't watched it earlier, and it's very nice. Great music by Yoko Kanno, and a great plot. :)

GUNDAM WING: Completed -- One of the first animes I watched. Very memorable, and probably the frontman of the entire Gundam series. Fantastic artwork, and a well-crafted story makes this a joy.

Phew. I think there are probably more I haven't listed, hehe.

Why didn't anyone mention this earlier ? That's reason enough to convince me.
I am so slapping my anime buddies..

Question's still standing: why is FMAlchemist so good ?

Edit: Yippy, Bleach ep. 33 just finished :D

Here we go...

Samurai champloo does have the "great" story, but is very funny sometimes.. its like a short story with a lot of good side stories... Mugen is one of the best anime characters i ve seen.. its not a must watch.. but its a very good anime...

Full Metal Alchemist.. OMG MAN.. WATCHA DOING? JUST GET IT RIGHT AWAY!
FMA is one of the anime that surprises people.. the story is one of the best (and saddest) one ever...
I refuse to explain.. watch the first episode.. the alchemy stuff will be explained there :|

Hunter X Hunter.. i m still watching.. i cant explain its style.. its different.. not a great one in my opinion.. very boring in the beggining....

I'm obviously not as big an otaku as some, looks at sapo
But recently I have been watching a bit of anime again which I havent done in a while.

Cowboy Bebop holds a special place in my heart. It's what got me interested in anime again. Everything about the series just exudes syle, the music is beautiful (composed by Yoko Kanno), top notch animation, and great plot points. I think it's probably the best piece of tv science-fiction I've ever seen, there were some really good classic scifi kind of stories. The way the main plot was sort of hidden and then all came together in the end was so beautiful and bitter-sweet. The final 6 episodes or so were all pretty dark.

I watched Samurai Champloo a couple weeks ago. It was pretty good but just couldn't compare to Bebop for me. The conclusion to the first season was so good though, I loved those two episodes. It seemed to me that Mugen was pretty much exactly the same character as Spike, anyone else notice the similarities?

Anyone else a fan of Miyazaki's work? The Castle of Cagliostro, Spirited Away, and Nausicaa are all some of my very favorite movies ever. I still haven't seen Howl's Flying Castle though :-x

I totally love One Peice as well.

EDIT: Since no one has mentioned My HiME (Mai HiME) yet. It's a fun series kind of in the vein of Sailor Moon (magic girls!). The story builds really well and there are some pretty cool fight scenes. The ending unfortunately wasn't the best.

This thread started in another one, where we did mention it ;) -- http://www.ubuntuforums.org/showpost.php?p=233169&postcount=9 .

I started liking it, but after 14 eps I lost interest. I think the plot is a little vague and shallow. And by the way, a My Hime season 2 is in the works. The main character will be someone who appeared at the end (you would know, I would not). http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/article.php?id=6467

And yes, Bebop is really something.
Edit: Character's stories were just too good and sentimental. Spike's moody past; Jet getting betrayed by his buddie: Ed's wacko hacker past; Vicious.. Julia.. Man I so want to see this again (have only seen it once).

No, really. I absolutely love FMA. It's really terrific.

Shortly after the September 11, 2001 attacks, Cartoon Network decided not to air episode 22, Cowboy Funk, which featured a terrorist who blew up tall buildings with bombs. After some time, the episode was eventually put back in the regular sequence of episodes. The real-life terror attacks and subsequent anthrax scare were also credited with delaying the release of the Cowboy Bebop movie in the United States by Sony Pictures, which featured a bounty-head who used technobiological terrorism.

Following the Space Shuttle Columbia disaster in 2003, Cartoon Network also decided not to air episode 19, Wild Horses, in which the Columbia shuttle was featured as a prominent plot point in the story. The episode had been shown in previous airings of the series, and has since been put back into the rotation.Just read that from the Wiki. That's bizarre :s

Thats why i hate dubbed and licensed anime.. they take off all the good parts...

I read in narutofan.com that the us version of naruto are going to slice off all the parts that has blood in it...

Naruto is a bloody hell anime.. they are gonna just keep the chats or what?

there's nothing better than Japanese original anime with subs...

there's nothing better than Japanese original anime with subs... Exactly. I personally like watching films and anime in their native languages. I mean, your brazilian (I'm hispanic - Dominican), you and I have seen some dubbed movies, and they're all wrong and just pityful. English films were made to be seen in english language, not some horrid Spanish translation *lol*. Imagine Cidade de Deus or Maria Full Of Grace in English, it would totally loose the mood. Some translations are really good, like Kenshin's spanish one (VERY good), but others sound all blocky and "japanese action flick translated to english" cheap.

Naruto is a bloody hell anime.. they are gonna just keep the chats or what? True. They always have an excuse to trim down certain politically incorrect aspects for the American versions.

I was never really a fan of mecha until Eva and Escaflowne, so I never watached Gundam. I did catch the first twelve episodes of Gundam Seed Destiny when they came out (last year I believe). I guess IMO it really wasn't as intriguing as watching "real people" with "real problems" (at the time I was watching Bebop and Mai.Hime and such). But that's just me, someone who hasn't found a lot of mecha animes he likes.

Ah, I never saw that thread...
Also, I think by stopping at episode 14 you probably missed the most interesting parts of the story. I agree that some of the earlier episodes were rather empty. The second story arc was basically a lot more exciting than the first. I have heard about the second season and I must say it sounds kind of stupid

Gundam ? Lol that would take you a long while. You don't really need to see GSeed to understand GSDestiny, but sometimes you don't understand things in GSDestiny (like why everyone thinks softguyX is such a unique badass - I would explain what a friend told me but then you'd kill me.). Graphics of Destiny were quite good I might say. Sound was not that hot.

Ichigo 100% ? I read about this new one yesterday, any good ? How sexually charged is it ? 'Cause I don't like sexually grossed out animes a lot (My.Hime was Ok though).

Exactly our situation. Last "decent" animes we got here were the original Saint Seya (like.. 8 years ago .. or more ?), DB/DBZ (they still show DBZ re-runs daily) and Rurouni Kenshin (like 2-3 years ago). We basically have no more anime (this is a small country -unlike Brazil- so no one even bothers). But, it's not like we're missing it ;) (hint: .torrent).

Oh god, I love wathcing anime. Last year or so I've been introduced to quite a bit of it, and I'll share some thoughts on what I've seen so far.

Fullmetal Alchemist: This series is AMAZING. Love all the twists and turns it took throughout it's 51 episodes (and can't wait for the movie that concludes the series to come out in English). Animation is pretty much top-notch throught the series. I also watched the English episodes on Cartoon Network, and I'm amazed at how good the voice work is. And Al is the most sympathetic character in the series, if not in all of anime.

Naruto: I've spent the last couple of months catching up to both the manga and anime for this, and I'm loving it. It reminds me a bit of Dragon Ball Z (with ninjas instead of martial artists), but that's a good thing, as I liked DBZ! I don't like how the anime deviates from the manga by adding extra stories, but it's not too bad of a series. Excellent fights, and interesting stories abound. Hell, my Ubuntu desktop even has a background with Hinata (my favorite character from the series, btw) on it! (Anybody got a Hinata skin I can use for XMMS to match?)

Anime rules... Ever since I was watching Dragon Ball Z and thinking to myself anime sucks, until I heard of the almightly Ghost in the Shell and Akira. These two movies bought me over to the world of anime. Here is a list of some of my favs so far from me watching.(I'm on dialup btw, so downloading is bloody hard).
Movies(watched and loved):
Ghost in the Shell (scifi triller)
Ghost in the Shell 2 ( Great animation and story )
Cowboy Bebop ( Great movie that adds to bebop)
Akira ( OMFG this movie is great... i'm reading the comics right now )
Ninja Scroll ( Samurai Fun )
Appleseed ( another gits-like movie )
Princess Mononoke(alright)

Series(watched and loved):
Cowboy Bebop ( Most original show i've seen to date )
Neon Genesis Evangelion ( one of my most fav shows of all time )
Naruto (only alright in my opinion... or not that great...)
Samurai Champloo ( ranks with cowboy bebop )
Full Metal Panic ( Great Show... cannot wait for the second raid )
Rahzephon ( good show that is similar to evangelion )
Full Metal Alchemist ( have and am on ep 5... so far so good )
Last Exile ( steam punk owns joo )

Here are some shows I have wanted to see, but since my anime source has seen on all on his illegal cartoon network(in canada it's illegal) and does not want to download... I have to wait till I move out and get broadband.
Movie and series I want to see:
Perfect Blue
Ghost in the Shell: SAC
Noir
plus others i cannot think of right now...

I also enjoy watching anime with subs in the original language... It's seems more real. However, I also liked halo 2 when I had it in french before the release... the aliens don't speak english :-? ...

Hi,
I'm a newbie when it comes to anime so I am completely cofused about everything that's available. I have seen several of Miyazaki's movies and enjoyed them all for different reasons. I've seen Neon Genesis Evangelion and thought it was pretty good, but nothing terrific. I've fallen completely for Chobits, even if I'm probably not its target audience  It's a nice mix of teen romance, humour, mystery and computer/AI - human relations, a topic I find very interesting.

The first episode of Full Metal Alchemist didn't persuade me, but I'll give it a few more tries. I got Cowboy Bebop because I heard it was in some ways reminicent of Firefly and it looks promising.
Flame of Recca - nah not after the first ep. Just doesn't look very interesting and the main character is irritating.

So, it seems I like (low key) humour, a little romance, mystery, interesting characters and a good plot. Not terribly interested in blood and fights, but certainly don't mind as long as they bring the story forward.

Suggestions?

Full Metal Alchemist is the kind of anime that is always getting better... and when it finishes you say:

"damit, this anime could have as many episodes as DBZ.. WHY? WHY DID IT FINISH NOW? I WANT MORE!" ](*,)

And as i say to my friends... 20 minutes cannot tell if an anime is good or not..

Watch the first Elfen Lied episode.. man.. i ve never saw something as bloody as the first Elfen Lied episode.. but the rest is just a "childish" story with blood and sometimes some almost "hentai" scenes.. but the first one was very good.. if i had judged just from watching the first one.. i was going to recommend a bad anime to my friends ](*,)

I saw X the movie. It wasn't that hot, specially because It just sucks that one needs to watch the series (wich is the same stuff, only stretched) in order to understand half of what they're saying. I can't say it's bad.. but it's not anywhere near my top 10.

Edit: I don't remember seeing anything with a concept like X's (we fight in force fields.. good wins is all love, bad wins stuff really get destroyed.. we're friends but enemies.. X & Y ..

I have a favorite anime series.

Dragon Warrior (http://www.absoluteanime.com/dragon_warrior/) (Dragon Quest in Japan). It was based on the Nintendo game and was played in the US during the early 90's. I watched every english episode when I was kid till they killed the series a few episodes from the finale.

Please, if anyone has these episodes I'd be very grateful to get a copy. Especially the last ones (even if they are in japanese, I just want to see the last episode!) :)

Yes. The episode with Kurosaki's sisters and weaker than weak Hollows was not really fun at all. I hope they don't turn the story-telling of the series (excuse me die-hard fans) into another slow-mo DBZ type. I mean, I watched DBZ on TV. It was NO FUN at all to see fighters spend 22 complete minutes "Allright.. I will hit you ! Watch out ! Oh no .. ! He looked at me ! Oh my what's next !! *Here's what's next, catch you all tomorrow kids!* (at least Rurouni Kenshin did this with style and grace)".

Ok so I'm about to start with either Champloo or FMAlchemist. I would be using Windows most of the time I'd be downloading mainly because I *LOVE* Bitcomet's file chooser (for some reason, Azureus has never really worked as well on me), this way I get to see episodes as I download them, instead of having to wait 4/8GB for the whole thing to complete.

So wich one should I start with ?

Sorry to go off topic for a second here, just want to clear something out : Appropiate or not, we are not here to publicly call out someone and tell him why he's wrong or not. In the case you ever need a correction, you will be contacted privately by the appropiate Mods (and above) ranks (heh, I just sounded Like Bleach Lieutenants :D!). The others can report a post/user and let us handle it privately. And in such case you get asked for something, you are welcomed to debate with us.

Sorry If I make someone here feel bad or anything, just wanted you all to know that just because we have ranks here it does not mean we are some dictators, we would discuss a matter then give out the final response.

Edit: See ? I just broke the rule there, but I had to publicly say readers know we do not think its nice to correct someone publicly (at least, not always).

Really ? To be honest I hardly ever use Azureus, I always stick with the Bittorrent.com official 4.x version. I have tried to download pieces using azureus, and I would get like 90% of the file, then I'd have to resume the others so that file would continue.

So Ok I will ask without a drop of shame, what do you exactly do to make this work ? This is vital for my downloading of huge Anime batch torrents. As usual, thanks sapo :D

Topic I: Most memorable moments (no more than three ).

Topic II: Most memorable characters (no more than three ).

Topic III: Animes you would want to see getting a live action Hollywood version (no more than three ).

Topic IV: Animes you would not, under any circumstances want to see getting a live action Hollywood version (no more than three ).

I. (In no particular order):
- Kenshin vs Saito (Rurouni Kenshin)
- Cowboy Bebop's last 4-5 episodes (beggining with Spike leaving on his own)

II.
- Spike Spiegel
- Himura Kenshin

III.
- Blood: The Last Vampire (doesn't have over the top complicated stuff)
- I would have said Cowboy Bebop, but the thought of them messing it up.. *ugh*

IV.
- Rurouni Kenshin (so much can go wrong..)
- Dragon Ball Z (at the moment nothing would look seriously good.. although It's supposedly in the works)

If what you all say is true (that it just keeps getting better and better), this one might end up higher than high on my top anime/movie/ova/live-action/media-in-general list ever.

Simply put, there were no "spare" parts in these first two episodes, at all. Thanks for those who made me start downloading it ! :-)

Ok so far I've seen the first six episodes of Full Metal Alchemist. Hands down its definitely one of the best I've seen yet (I'll have to wait til end for a final decision eh ;)?). Story's top notch, characters are fun and unique (yeah, Al), sound is great and as Bleach, it has great Blend of comedy and action, although its far more deep in the drama department.

P.S. - I still haven't gotten Bleach 38 because I'll wait next week so I could watch at least two consecutive episodes (20 minutes a week as tense as Bleach is right now.. ending with a "To be continued" would just drive me nuts).

Wow, this thread came up while i was away, SHAME ON YOU!

Anyway, here goes my anime collection :D

(Preface: I'm a Gundam Fanboy :D)

Mobile Suit Gundam The 08th MS Team and Miller's Report: Really quick 12 episode OVA set during the One Year War (Miller's Report is a "movie" and was incorporated into episode 8 when it was aired on CN, quite well too). Basically a love story. First anime I ever bought.

Mobile Fighter G Gundam: Quirky, not standard Gundam fare, fun all around. Nice underlying love story.

After War Gundam X: Canceled after about 36 episodes, but still shines as one of my favorite series of all time. Definately worth checking out, even for non Gundam fanboys.

Mobile Suit Gundam 0080: The War In The Pocket: 6 episode OVA, tearjerker.

Mobile Suit Gundam 0083: Stardust Memories: Love it or hate it, it fulfils its role as a bridge between Mobile Suit Gundam and Mobile Suit Zeta Gundam.

Mobile Suit Gundam: The original. Classic :D

Mobile Suit Zeta Gundam: Considered by many to be the best of all Gundam. Serious war drama.

Mobile Suit Gundam Double Zeta: A second season to Zeta, first half is much lighter compared to Zeta, but the second half brings the old feeling of Zeta back.

Mobile Suit Gundam Char's Counterattack: An end to the Char - Amuro rivalry. Again, quite like Zeta.

Mobile Suit Gundam F91: A feature length movie, starts off the Crossbone "saga".

Mobile Suit Victory Gundam: A product of Tomino's depression, very dark, yet entertaining.

New Mobile Suit Report Gundam Wing: The Gundam that most casual anime fans in America prolly know best, ranks down in my list :D

Mobile Suit Turn-A Gundam: Tomino's only entry into the Alternate Universe, much more upbeat than Victory. Origin of the "Turn-A Bang" theory.

Mobile Suit Gundam SEED and Destiny: The latest entries into the Gundam saga. Seem to be warning us about the possible future of genetic engineering. Uses many Gundam cliches, but I do quite enjoy it.

G-Savior: Live action movie. Would have been good if it hadn't had the Gundam moniker attached, but it had so much to live up to and couldn't.

Okay, thats it for Gundam :P Now for my other stuff.

Full Metal Panic: Combine Gundam and Ah! My Goddess and this is what you get. Enough mecha action to keep Mecha diehards pleased and the romantic comedy intertwined is quite funny. Plus Sagara makes me look good.

Full Metal Panic Fomuffu: Like FMP, but almost no mecha action. But still romantic comedy goodness with Sagara's military mishaps :D

Cowboy Bebop: Do I really need to say anything?

Furi Kuri (FLCL): Insane doesn't begin to describe it. The producers were on crack when they wrote this.

Ah! My Goddess: Cute, funny, and a great romantic comedy.

Macross 7: Love it or hate it, watching Basara is just so stupid its funny.

Rurouni Kenshin: The classic samurai anime. The Kyoto Arc is one of the best parts of the series.

Samurai Champloo: What I would call a stylized and updated version of Kenshin, but still very nice :D

So there you have it :D

Yea, I like Gundam. I'm all for the whole "Giant Robots are COOL!" thing (anyone watch Megas XLR? I'm basically like Jamie)

But Eva == teh ick. I dunno, I got a creepy vibe from that thing (I also don't like end of the world crap)

I think the exact opposite. I love Eva better than any other mecha ever (If I ever liked another mecha, that is). In anime there are only a few things comparable or better than Giant Robots that look like they have more sentiment than Shinta watching his gal die in his hands. I know, you as a Gundam lover obviously can find sentiment in the Gundam mecha, but I just like things raw and .. I don't know man, I just liked Eva. I respect you liking Gundam though (I watched about 14eps of GSDestiny.. not bad, not my type but not bad -I know I just watched a little, but I've watched 10eps of FMAlchemist and I'm psyched-).

It also might be that my friend (who was/is a bigtime Eva fan) used to argue for HOURS about "who would win" scenarios :D

FMA is good. But I heard it gets VERY dark towards the end (I only saw about 30 someodd eps)

Destiny is playing out kinda like Zeta did, but it does have some great "HOLY *****!!" moments (The fight between Kira/Freedom and Shinn/Impulse anyone)

Don't spoil it to me please (FMA). I have seen 11 episodes and some of them have been pretty dark at times. Plus, there's nothing wrong with a Dark anime as long as it delivers an impact story.

I wish I would have watched at least the -Gundam before GSDestiny- from the beggining, so I would then watch GSD and fully understand it and maybe like it. Like I said, I quit watching GSD after only 12-14 eps.

Watching one episode a day, it would take me well over a year.. even if I watched three a day, my DSL speed would require me months of DL.

Okay let me tell you what makes it cool.

You have the Kenshinish character, Jin, with his own dark past, but not as light hearted (kinda like Battosai a lot).

Then you have Mugan, who in my own words looks like if you took a street punk from NYC (no offense) and dropped him into Edo Japan and gave him mad crazy sword skills.

Then you have Fuu, who is like Kaoru, but younger.

The series rocks on its own, has Kenshin like elements, but isn't Kenshin.

Oh, and Battlecry is one of THE BEST openers EVER.

Yanno what, just go watch it :D

Ok so I just saw Bleach 38. It was really good and interesting (although I didn't like Chad's scenes on this one) but I must admit that after watching 13 FMA episodes, visually I felt like It was an almost complete downgrade to go from FMA to Bleach. I love Bleach, but I just feel that FMA episodes look so much longer and deeper O.o (of course.. gorgeous looks) . What do you all think ?

Also, how is Champloo any different than Bleach or Kenshin ? (I know they're a lot different but perhaps in the Action scenes?)

Since I was really curious about Samurai Champloo (FMA episodes have my client on a choke hold) , I decided to download a Champloo AMV from AnimeMusicVideos.org ([Smahut]AMVSC-Ayreon-BYDK.avi). I must say graphics look really neat and clean (although not sure it looks as good as FMA), but the fighting style was the thing that impressed me the most (the Mugen guy fighting style looks so "sloppy" yet awsome ^_^; It looks really fast-paced and entertaining :-X).

So what do you all think ? Will they be as entertaining as they really are after watching a masterpiece like FMA (Full Metal Alchemist for those that joined late ;)) ?

P.S. - I'm somewhere between the 20th-25th FMA episode.. the Scar episodes rock :-O !

So out of boredom, I'll review the anime I saw today:

1. Bleach episode 39.
One word: wow. Right now Kenpachi is one of the coolest villains I can remember of ! (for some reason, his face/style reminds me of Shishio from Rurouni Kenshin). Ichigo's sword side story is really getting in shape now into an interesting story on its own :D. Also, the episode had a nice comic relief on the guy with the Fro' ^_^. Last but not least, Kenpachi's lieutenant (the one on his shoulder) is mad cute even when she's mad :=)

2. Fullmetal Alchemist episodes 21-22.
This series has got me intrigued from the beggining. I won't stress much on how much I'm loving it, but I will say this: episode 23 was yet another eye opener (specially after they showed a myriad of villains I still don't know off :-o).

3. Samurai Champloo episode 1.
After seeing how the last FMA episode I saw kind of like gave a whole new life to the anime, I decided to pause it a bit so I could finally see what Champloo is all about. After watching the first episode, It felt like a complete déjà vu. I totally felt like I was watching Bebop in the Edo era. I was impressed with FMA visuals, but Champloo's visuals are just way too hip and awsome.

It's kind of hard to see these three anime beasts simulatenously, but they're all graet :D !

I looked around torrent-sites and found what looks like the complete OST, so I guess I won't have to waste my precious yet crappy bandwith uploading this :D.

Anyways, that disc had been lost for quite a while now and when I popped it in and hear "It's gonna rain".. man I remembered how much did Kenshin kicked ass :D.

Ok new question:

What is _the_ best AMV (Anime.Music.Video) you have seen ? If possible, a download link ;).

In my case, it's the one with the song Touched by Vast with Rurouni Kenshin as a backdrop made by Otaku Vengeance. I'm not sure this is it since I didn't download it to check it, but the description looks like the one I love. http://www.animemusicvideos.org/members/members_videoinfo.php?v=473

Destiny is the direct sequel to SEED, so as such if you start watching it before you finish SEED, you'll get major spoilers :P

Also a new Gundam OVA hit. MS IGLOO. Really high quality CG (like near Final Fantasy Spirits Within level)

Saturday I'm gonna have a huge Monster marathon at my house with a few buddies that heard the Newline Cinemas news and got excited (none of us have seen the anime, but liked the storyline). Right now we have about 20 chapters down but by saturday we expect to have most of them available ;). It'll be fun :D.

If any of you want to come, you just have to come down to the Dominican Republic and give me a call. I'll have free chips for you ;).

If you like futuristic stuff.. i would recommend Infinity Ryvius (http://anidb.info/perl-bin/animedb.pl?show=animelist&adb.search=mugen+no+ryvius&x=0&y=0) .. it was an anime that surprised me.

But if you want comedy.. Great Teacher Onizuka (http://anidb.info/perl-bin/animedb.pl?show=animelist&adb.search=great+teacher+onizuka&x=0&y=0) rlz.. but i think you already watched it.. didnt you?

I just started downloading Love Hina and Trigun. Oh, thanks for the reccomendation on School Rumble. I love it :D

Its more like the first FMP than Fumoffu, meaning a lot of fun mecha action. In fact, we only see Chidori once in the entire episode, but it pulls a reference to Fumoffu. Very good overall. Classic FMP. Can't wait for more :D

Ok I just watched Bleach episode 40 (I know I know it's been out for a few days, but I waited for Lunar's release !). It had to be the shortest feeling Bleach episode yet. It felt like they battled for 20 minutes when a punch was hardly thrown. It was really nice to know Yachiru (she's so cute..) and Kenpachi's story (and how a bad a$$ like him was even attached to her).

Center topic: Midway entertainment

Act 1 - Farewell Ceremony
Fullmetal Alchemist: 25/51 (49%)
I'm finally halfway the Fullmetal Alchemist series. I have to say, if the series ended right now, it would still be in my top 5 -if not on top- favorite anime list. It's so rich from every possible aspect. It's comedy _really_ makes me laugh, the action scenes keep me on the edge of my seat, character development and involvement is superb and the dramatic scenes make me feel melancholic :-X (Brigadier Hughes on episode 25.. man that was though) plus several other aspects. Although I can't wait to see the other half, I'm just as lost as to what is going to happen, wich is happening to me also in Monster: after 9 episodes, I have no idea where this series is going O.o. But still, me and my buddies enjoyed our little Monster session ^_^.

Act 2 - Edo Period Bohemian Rhapsody
Samurai Champloo: 09/26 (34.6%)
So far, Champloo's fresh and good, but not _that_ good. Animation is realistic beyond belief
and very sweet and well done (although they're so realistic looking that character's can't be as emotive as I'd like them to be -I can still see Mugen's crazy though). Like I was warned by the theOtaku.com's review (I love their reviews), it tends to divert quite a bit with no apparent sign of certain plot twists having any effect nor connection with their ultimate goal (sorry for making comparisons, but this distracting divertion is something I've yet to experience in FMA). Like I was also warned, fight scenes tend to be rather short :? and not half as enganging as they brag about prior to fighting (comparison: would you even imagine a 30 second "that's it" battle between Kenshin and Saito O.o ?). On the other hand, the easy sailing, bohemian mood the series uses is really relaxing and entertaining.

Act 3 - Post-traumatic stress disorder
Monster: 09/78 (11.5%)
What the heck did _we_ get ourselves into? I started watching this one on Friday night with a couple of buddies and we were "Wowed" several times in such a few episodes. Personally, I dislike the animation (someone could have told me this was a 12 year old anime and I would have probably believed the person) but this series is about everything but trying to be nice to the viewer/reader. Right now we are in a state of .. I'll quote some of the things we said throught or 09 viewed episodes
- Episode 01-03: "That _leech_ ! Someone slap her!" ; "What kind of hospital is that O.o?!" ; "Are they really like that :-S.." "You see that psycho typist/investigator? We are now calling him The Hacker" ... "Wow."
- "WHERE is this going ?! And what MORE could they add in 70+ chapters ?!" "Dude.. the anime could have ended up right now and I would have been satisfied."
- Episode 07-X: "Plot twist. Wow"

This anime will probably take me the longest to see as I pretend to see it when my buddies are with me (not that I'm scared(!), but we want to watch it together.. not like we have a choice, we're helping ourselves with the big downloads, so one needs the other).

Act 4 - Shounen Rejoice!
Bleach: 40/XXX (X%)
This one's good man. All of us could mention several things we don't like about it (hint: Useless Side Stories in the middle of "dinner"), but let's face it, once the episode's over, we can't wait for the next one (this is way I think following a weekly series is almost like self-inflicted torture). Besides the whole kick ass Kenpachi battle (talk about an intriguing battle), the thing that has me intrigues the most is how are the other characters besides Ichigo going to square against the other Captains. This one looks like it's not going to end anytime soon so I'm really glad I picked up while It still wasn't _too_ big (hint: Naruto.. I will get you some day.. grr). I like the fact that I like to think that besides Hollows, there are no real bad guys (at least in general). From a perspective, Ichigo and crew would even look like the bad guys (hey, they were the ones who erupted into the Shinigami's world). Apparently, we'll have to keep an eye out for this one for months to come.
--

Anyways, that was my half and not-really-half review of the anime. I know it could be not really accurate at some points, but that's my perception of what I am seeing so far. Of course, I will re-post once I'm done/more advanced with them.

The beggining of monster is a bit boring too... you are still going to meet a lot of new people.. and a lot of the current are gonna die  dont jump into conclusions... you will get surprised if you do...

Bleach:
What can i say.. ITS SOH DAMN FREAKING GOOD! i cant wait for the next episode... i m thinking if the kuchiki captain are gonna pity them.. of just take them as prisioners.. or maybe some miraculous appearence from ichigo to kick his ass

And bored... i hope i had some anime freak friend to watch anime with me.. but nobody here likes anime.. i just watch everything with my friend nina (my little kitty)
1. Is Naruto over ? If not, does it show any signs of ending anytime soon ? How many chapters are there so far (last time I checked, I would have had to download approximately 25GB :-/)

2. Yes, "some" side stories are boring (so far, the dutch guy that ate a lot, the lame assassin, the goblins et al have not really been that fun). Right now the thing attaching me to this anime is the three main characters. I like Mugen's wacky and comedic way, Jin's "serious" yet permissive style (a samurai that sells his sword in a pawn shop?!) and I generally fall for cute characters like Fuu :-# (like Ed's Automail chick and Kenpachi's Lieutenant.. they're so cute ^_^). Comedy here is good, but not even close to FMA's.

3. Plot characters dying? In Monster? That's not unexpected :-P. Heck, one of my brothers kept waiting for the "Damn Monster" to appear! (that is, until the lock picker calls the young "Dicaprio" monster- I think my brother was disappointed :?). Plot twists? they're always healthy.

4. Bleach is good man.. so good. It could be dubbed a simple brainless shounen and it could arguably be one, but I'm still so intrigued and attached by it. I know certain anime specialize in making the current enemy impossible to beat then making the next one even MORE impossible, but if Bleach pulls this out, this will be an anime I won't forget in a while -if ever. Ever since they showed Zaraki's powers I've been thinking (there's like a dozen other captains minus one plus the old man, and they don't really look half as kick ass and fierce as Kenpachi does, what the heck will this guys come up with? The only possibility I can think of is them acknowledging Ichigo's powers after 1 or 2 more battles and make him on of their team and release Kuchuki, but that would be way too expected for a series like Bleach ;). And by the way dude, what release did you see? In Lunar's late release, at the end when they show the trailers, you do see Ichigo swinging at Kuchuki's Captain ..

"]And bored... i hope i had some anime freak friend to watch anime with me.. but nobody here likes anime.. i just watch everything with my friend nina (my little kitty)"

Actually, I don't have really freak anime friends. I watched Monster with my older brother and my neighboor/best-friend, but that was because I had shown a link to my friend about Monster getting a live action movie, and after he read the plot he awkwardly, got _really_ interested in it. On the other hand, my brother can watch any type of anime..

* ugh *

Today I'm planning on starting to download Naruto. From scratch (I might start with episode 8 or 10 because I've seen the first ones). Someone please say some words of encouragement because I could have fainted when I saw the gazillion batch torrents for it ;-/

Why might you ask am I downloading all these anime at once ? I like variety. Sometimes I just want to see something different at the moment. In my case, I do know, so what better moment than this to start _slowly_ to download Naruto.

If someone can, please compare it to FMA so I know what I'm up against (because after seeing an FMA episode, anything else I try to see falls really short..)

From the few episodes I saw, it looked -IMO- a bit more refined and stylistic (being centered around ninjas instead of "saiyans" is a drastic change).

Heh, you just mixed DBZ with Kenshin in a single sentence. Today I'll have nightmares for sure.

Terrible news.. Cellphone^2 (subbers of SEED Destiny who get releases out in 24 hours) made it's last release today. They've disbanded. :(

I really prefered them over, say, HaroTori or SeedFansubs who take almost 3-5 days to release a sub.. :(

Ok so now I've watched the first 16 episodes of Samurai Champloo wich means I've seen 61.5% of it :D. I must admit, the last 3 or 4 episodes have positively changed my mind about the series. It's still goofy and a little bland at times, but the plot of these last episodes have really lifted my perception of the series. I hope it keeps the "good episode!" streak going. After all, its just 26 episodes long, and FMA is twice and big and packs drama from minute 0 to minute 23.42 (and don't get me started on the 95 eps of Kenshin.. although by the end of FMA I'll have to think about wich one I liked the most).

I've paused _All_ my other anime until I finish with this one *or* until it falls to the -not as entertaining as the last episode- dark side again.

P.S. - From what I'm able to see, the fact that every episode is sort of a stand alone chapter in the series thus bringing new and unexpected things to the table (although this series revolves a whole lot around them being three bums starving to death) makes it have a pretty nice replay value (good for my newly started anime collection :D).

Have you seen Samurai Seven the OLD breakthrough movie ? http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0047478/

Well it's a new take on the storyline, only blending it with mecha and well.. samurais. From what I've heard it has superb graphics, and being a tech updated version of the old movie, its supposed to be good, plus, its only about 26 episodes long :D.

Samurai 7 is an anime series based on Akira Kurosawa's classic 1954 movie entitled The Seven Samurai. The series is being directed by Toshifumi Takizawa and produced by Shouji Murahama. There are 26 episodes to this series with each episode costing around ¥32,500,000 ($300,000) to make. It has been announced that FUNimation will get the rights to dubbing this series.

Plot (no spoilers)
The village of Kanna is a nice rice village with a problem. Every year during harvest time huge mechanical robots, known as the Nobuseri, come and steal away almost all of the rice that had been harvested that year. Not only that, the Nobuseri are becoming more demanding, now taking women and children in addition to rice. The elder of Kanna has declared that to protect the village they must hire samurai. However, they have no money and thus must find samurai willing to protect the village for the price of all the rice that he/she can eat. He sends three members of the village out to the city to begin looking. And thus the journey begins.

So now I have finished watching Samurai Champloo. Scratch most of what I said, this one rocks. It is true, the main plot seems to be a somewhat vague specially if you notice all the bad things that happen because of it. But man oh man, what _a_ finale does this series rock ! Although fight scenes were really a lot sorter than what one would except, in substance they are beefy, well done and mostly unique. I particularly enjoyed the way the last chapters resembled Bebop a lot more than the others (with the über weird chapters like the Baseball one; the jazzy music in the last two and the cinematic feel of -we're doomed..no we're really doomed!-).

Animation 10/10
Sound 9/10
Creativity 10.5/10
Main Plot 8.9/10 (the last episode really mad me forget how goofy it was)
Other Plots 9/10
Overall 9/10

Bleach 41.
Unbelievably, this one simply keeps getting better and better. Last week I kept thinking to myself "How are they going to make me believe someone can be at the most half as kick ass as Kenpachi ?!" and now I'm simply thinking "Kenpachi ? Who's he?". I really enjoy how this anime, specially _this_ chapter manages to regardless of how serious the situation, lower its guard a bit and deliver on the act laughable content. This episode made me think the whole time "Ok this is gonna end tragically.. soon".

Is it me or are Bleach episodes the ones that makes you feel like instead of 23 minutes you just watched the 40 second "in the next episode" trailer the most O.o ? I mean, every time an episode reaches the middle or ends I'm like "ALREADY :-@ ](*,) ?!". Man Bleach so rocks  ..

I have actually never seen the now famed Adult Swim. I think I once did but I don't remember what is it that I saw. We had CN a while ago (a _while_ ago), then they trashed it and went with a spanish crappy as h3|| CN, then I'm not sure if they trashed or not but I haven't seen CN in a while. I don't like dubbed movies/anime so its not like I miss it.

Whenever I don't know what to get I just visit Animesuki (http://www.animesuki.com/) for some legal anime downloads. Also, to learn about good anime I usually I try to read what people like on top anime lists like the one one AnimeNFO (http://www.animenfo.com/statistic/top.php?type=anime) (they have reviews and stuff: also http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/ and http://www.theotaku.com/ for better reviews).

Also I've read Adult Swim tends to cut some scenes and brush off some on language (Like Bebop (http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/columns/edit-list.php?id=12) and Champloo's (http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/columns/edit-list.php?id=297) language).

hehe it seems that you REALLY loved samurai champloo hm? O:)

--Possibly not an anachronism: Many have noted the resemblance between Mugen's fighting style and the African-derived Brazilian martial art of capoeira. Capoeira has existed since the 1620s, so there's certainly a possibility that a practitioner of this fighting art, which originated as a form of self-defense for runaway slaves, might have crossed Mugen's path; and Mugen's ability to learn fast and thoroughly from one combat example is already well documented. I think we can leave this one open as an intriguing maybe.

I really don't understand how people can read mangas _first_ then watch the anime. The bleach manga is up to episode 187, but reading it would totally downgrade my experience.. 187 mangas also mean that we'll have "Bleach" for at least a 50 episodes more ;). Good things I started backing it up before It turns way too big (hint: naruto).

Full Metal Panic: TSR ep 2 came out.

REVIEW TIME!!

It followed the form from Full Metal Panic! by following a premier Mecha Action Ep with a High-School Comedy ep, although there was some massive killing and the introduction of the main villian it looks like (frickin' psycho...)

Also something wierd. We are introduced to two sisters who are a little more than friendly with each other. There is also something kinda creepy about them, the way their faces look. Its like they aren't completely human...I'd say something like the Extendeds from Gundam SEED: Destiny

Overall very good :D

The problem is that still i just know a lot of random words, like, megami, kami, kage, kaze, aka, omae, watashi, etc etc etc...

but still i cant just form phrases like this:

watashi wa kaeru desu.

or something like

omae wa okama desu.

and..

boku wa shiranai.

Here i picture of the first lesson of my japanese book:

Wow. That looks complicated. They're just saying "Ok so you write THIS -whatever it means- after a noun (etc) when you're referring to a novelty or something worth highlighting. At the moment, I couldn't imagine learning that without a teacher.

I'd post a screenshot of the Rosetta Stone software, but you can probably get a demo and try it ;).

Ok I'm starting to agree on what you all said a while back on FMA being only 51 episodes long. I have only 10 episodes left to see the whole thing and I'm just thinking -how are they going to -in a rush- end this one? It's looks like this one could have gone for several more episodes!-. The series got a huge lift when they showed all -or most- of the seven "bad" guys (Greed rocks) and the Fire Alchemist filler could have gone for at least 5 episodes!

In short, I am intrigued by FMA. Before I started to watch I thought to myself "man! 51 episodes! that's long for that type of topic!" and now I'm thinking "man! 51 episodes.. too short O_O!!".

I read a little of FMA's manga today and I picked up this weird but nice variation:

On episode 36 of the anime, starting on minute 19, the _full-grown_ Winry and Riza start a conversation about Riza firing her gun at others at who she protects. On the manga, this same dialogue happens waay back to when Roy was recruiting the brothers shortly after the initial "incident", where we see the little Winry asking these questions to Riza, who instead of assembling her gun like the anime, is holding a cup of coffee (while Mustang is questioning the brothers on locked doors). Something interesting I found was the fact that on both situations Winry shows her dislike for Roy Mustang (Anime because he killed her parents; Manga because he's trying to take the brothers away from her).

And yes, I'm enjoying this anime a _lot_ ;).

Edit 1: Another slight variation. In the anime, after Winry fixes Ed's automail, he starts sparring with Al for wich Winry tells them to stop because he'll break his automail that way. The exact same happens in the manga, but instead, it happens when Ed gets the automail installed in the first place. http://groups.msn.com/FullMetalAlchemist/volume6.msnw?action=ShowPhoto&PhotoID=4246

Edit 2: Also, Ed's state alchemist test is quite different on the manga.

LOL this is fun ^_^ !

Anyone interested in the manga, it's here (http://groups.msn.com/FullMetalAlchemist/fullmetalalchemistmanga.msnw).

What next ?

I am six episodes away from finishing Fullmetal Alchemist. I was planning to get Samurai Champloo after I finished it but as it turns out, I already got that one. So now I re-post my question? What do you guys/gals advise next ? If possible, I would like the next anime I get to be somewhat short (no more than 30 chapters) so I can start on a new after that in not as big period of time (of course, short but good). I was thinking about Elfen Lied (13 episodes), but I don't think I got the stomach required for the amount of gruesomeness I've read the anime has.
