I am currently running Fedora Core4, and i am thinking about making the switch to ubuntu as i hear it is faster. And quite easier to use. My question is...is it much faster than FC4? and IS it easier to use and set up? I'm quite a n00b to linux. But i hear many good things about this OS :) Thankyou in advance for anyone who posts

Yes it is easier to use and yes it doesn't require a lot of setting up, because I had a hard time setting up my audio system in fedora because my dvd image had a bad alsa player (still waiting for the bugzilla report to come through on how to solve alsa...), but ubuntu had everything from the sound to the display resolutions set up properly...

In fedora, the display resolutions for a Gateway VX700 say that it maxs out at 1600x1200 (thats on a 17 inch monitor) well in reality it maxs out at 1280x1024 which ubuntu let me set at the begin...

For speed though, yes the new gcc in fedora is fast, but who cares... The optimized kernel in ubuntu makes up for the speed and where you had to download the ntfs module for the kernel in order to get to the windows drive, ubuntu has that stock...

A word of advice though, don't download breezy the development version if you want absolute stability.

As far as a community and support goes, this forum is a whole lot better than the officially recognized fedoraforum.org is...

So download Ubuntu 5.04 Hoary and join the community...

Well, I don't know about speed as in application responsiveness, but it is MUCH easier/faster to set up. Package management should be in the list of inalienable human rights :D Take a peek at http://www.ubuntuguide.org.

Took me about 5 mins to set up mplayer. I remember taking about an hour to set it up on FC2.

A lot of applications and games can be downloaded, installed, and configured with one command. Apt-get is really nice.

and IS it easier to use and set up?

I don't know about faster...but it is easier to use I think. why? Because there is so much software in the repository for Ubuntu that you never have to search third party repos to get software packages.

Ah...i got everything up and running no problems. It configured everything for me, and to be honest i notice a difference in speed while loading up programs. This is a brilliant OS and ive only started using it this second! Im glad i made the transition to ubuntu its a brilliant step towards an awesome system.
