I wonder how the guys at Micros**t feel about this: of the Top 500 Supercomputers in the whole world, 376 (that's 75.2% ) run Linux =D> =D> This acording to the last published list from Top500.org, a site that lists the Top 500 Supercomputers every 6 months, with statistics about operating system used, number of processors, etc...
Go here http://www.top500.org/ and check the current list (Nov. 2006 ) Next one will be published in June, But I don't think the number of Linux powered Supercomputers will change :)

Its a known fact that *nix dominates the server/super computer world.

Yes, but I'm not talking about *nix in generic as you do, I'm talking specifically about Linux. The rest of the *nix systems has the rest of the percentage, but LINUX SPECIFICALLY has 75.2%

Well its a bit hard to tweak windows to have more than 4 cpus since there is no source code.

Thats because Windows (DOS/BASIC) was designed for the personal computer.

Last 500 supercomputer list (11-2007):

85.20 % of the world top 500 supercomputers run Linux!
Only 1.20 % run Windows.

And are we calling Windows an operating system?? Come on, Windows is nothing but a joke.

Yeah, and with Debian Lenny it would boot up in like... 1 second.

Try about 20 milliseconds.

Try about 20 milliseconds.

I'd take up quite a bit of space though

I'd like to see DSL on one of those things! :lolflag:

My college just got a supercomputer and all the news will tell me is that it has AMD processors. I'm sure it will run some sort of Linux, but there is a chance that they might try Solaris, as I believe they do give the school some money and already have some Sun systems in place.

And the papers said what kind of power supply set up was going to be used, as well as the brand, but I don't remember and don't really care.

I'd like to see DSL on one of those things! :lolflag:Really, you would likely see a performance regression over something like Debian, Yoper, Arch, etc.

DSL optimizes for slow computers, optimizing for a fast one is completely different.
