ok the ubuntu installed using wubi seems to be missing shut down and restart options. i think they were there earlier on... :|

Are you in a XGL session by any chance?

umm whats that? i am on gnome. i installed kde but still use gnome at the login box...

You haven't installed a compositing window manager recently have you, Beryl or Compiz for example?

When did the options disappear? What action did you perform?

You are probably now using kdm (the KDE display manager) rather than gdm (the Gnome display manager) therefore you will not have all the logout and shutdown options when using Gnome, only when you are using kde. you will find out how to revert back to gdm in the 3rd post by Aysiu.

I had the same problem once before and this resolved it.
