I believe that the grammatically correct way to pronounce it would be Zoobunto. Like the word Xylem:

Main Entry: xy·lem
Pronunciation: 'zI-l&m, -"lem
Function: noun
Etymology: German, from Greek xylon
: a complex tissue in the vascular system of higher plants that consists of vessels, tracheids, or both usually together with wood fibers and parenchyma cells, functions chiefly in conduction of water and dissolved minerals but also in support and food storage, and typically constitutes the woody element (as of a plant stem) -- compare PHLOEM

From: Merriam-Webster (http://www.m-w.com/dictionary/xylem)

Xubuntu

Xubuntu : (ecks'-oo-boon-too)
emphasize the "X" as the letter, then the rest of Ubuntu

One reason for separating the first letter out is so that the growing brand name of Ubuntu is heard and the connection subconsciously made between Xubuntu, Kubuntu and Edubuntu to Ubuntu.

XFCE:
I pronounce each letter separately (ecks'-eff-see-eee)

Kubuntu:
Although I used to blend the "k" portion into the whole word, I'm now emphasizing the "K" separately so now it's (kay-oo-boon-tu) similar to "KDE', KWrite, Kate, etc.)

Edubuntu:
Again, separate the front portion, so (ed'-you-boon-too)

If I dont know how to pronounce somthing I pronounce it phonetically. Zuh-Bun-Tu, Which of course in English is usually wrong, which is why I am enjoying learning Spanish, a very phonetic language.

I say Koobuntu actually (even though that pronunciation is already taken). This is due to reading X as the letter Chi, a habit I picked up in math.

 then you have to call it h-ubuntu. Cause in maths X is the greek letter χ (h like in words hint, house etc. Not chi!!!)

That's right, but Ubuntu is pronounced Oo-boon-too isn't it, which would make it Zoo-boon-too. Which is how I pronounce it anyway. :)

Circus-Killer

okay, stupid poll considering it doesnt have an option for the proper pronounciation.
its pronounced Zoo-boon-too.

even though ubuntu is an african word, and X's have a clicking sound in most african languages. for example, xhosa is pronounced khosa, with a clicking sound on the K. however, we're not speaking strictly african languages, and as far as i can tell from the research i did, the official pronounciation is zoo-boon-too.

this is a wise decision as if we pronounced it koo boon too, people would confuse it with kubuntu.
so here it is:
oo-boon-too (ubuntu)
koo-boon-too (kubuntu)
zoo-boon-too (xubuntu)
ed-you-boon-too (edubuntu)

Edit: on a side note, a pronounce xfce as "x-face" which i know is probably wrong, but when i get used to a pronounciation, im stuck with it.

beefcurry
June 18th, 2007, 01:01 PM
well if we have it as X!buntu it would be "Click"buntu. If im not mistaken X! is the south african letter for a click sound.

Zoobuntu for me.

I know the developers would probably be on top of the issue, but I used to wonder whether the names used by the Ubuntu derivative distros might mean something bad or embarrassing in one of the Bantu languages (or a completely different language). For example, instead of 'humanity toward others', 'Kubuntu' might mean 'hostility toward others'.

Are there any linguists out there who might have insights into this, before I offer too much speculation which will probably just make me look silly? :)

I might dig out my chylophone......other than X-ray "ks" for "x" is awkward at the start of a word. Mind you, the "accent" I listen with sometimes makes me think people are saying "error" (with a quiet or silent final "r") when they're really saying "era"!

Although, if you pronounce the "X" as you do in "LaTeX", you would pronounce it 'koo-buntu'. :)

Erik Trybom

Actually none of your proposed pronunciations make sense if you speak any other language than English. In Swedish, for example, Xubuntu is perfectly pronouncable. Same goes for Spanish, and, obviously, Bantu (even though I'm sure they sound pretty different).

In English, however, the u-sound is used in a somewhat different way so words like Ubuntu are awkward to say. That doesn't mean the name itself is bad though. It just happens to be difficult to pronounce in English.

LaTeX, on the other hand, IS a stupid name, but that's off topic so I'll have to rant about it in some other thread.

Zoo Boon too

I used to call Ubuntu You-bun-too in the past as I am used to the english use of the letter u, like the words universe and United States but now I call it by the proper Ooh-boon-too.
I used to call Kubuntu by the same reasoning, Koo-bun-too. Same as Xubuntu, Zyou-bun-too.
Now I pronounce Kubuntu Kooh-boon-too, and Xubuntu Zoo Boon too

If you want to call it "Ecks-oo-bun-too", wouldn't it make more sense to call it "Xbuntu"? It sounds better and has less syllables (which always works towards a more catching name).
