In honor of the "NU" Ubuntu Maine-iacs LoCo Team, I was wondering; have you ever been to Maine?

me: I regularly go to Maine when ever I can.

If you have been to Maine, you don't need me to tell you that Maine is one of the most beautiful states in the USA.

Where in Maine have you been?

Me: The coast from New Hampshire to Bar Harbour

What is your favorite part of Maine?

Me: I have many favorite parts, the coast of Maine is awesome.

here is a short list of my favorite parts of Maine:

1. The city of Portland, especially Portland's Historic Waterfront District and it's Old Port District .

Portland has become the most exciting, dynamic and happening city on the east coast.

2. Portland Head Lighthouse:

3. Monhegan Island:

4. Bar Harbour:

When were you last in Maine?

me: Last there this past, summer.

Maine should have remained part of Massachusetts. There's really only one place to go; Bob's Clam Hut in Kittery.

I have to say I have eaten at better looking places in Maine, usually that are on the water and not a roadside.

Didn't you ever learn not to judge a book by it's cover. Roadside seafood joints are a stable of New England dining. Bob's Clam Hut has been highly rated by regional and national magazines (Forbes, Esquire, Yankee). Forbes selected it has one of their top 40 restaurants in America.

Guess I should pipe in on this. I was last in Maine err right now I live in a little town called Vienna. Don't sneeze or you will go right thru it. I work out of Portland which is probably one of the busiest cities in Maine.

There are a couple of great places to eat that a lot of people don't know about. Moody's Diner in Waldoboro http://www.moodysdiner.com and the Maine Diner http://www.mainediner.com/ both have great food.

The Moosehead Lake region is a great place to visit for some great scenery.

Add to the great eating list:

Helen's Restaurant in Machias -- save room for pie
Olde Mill Pub in Skowhegan -- get the venison burger
Governor's in Waterville and several other places -- it's all good. Go for breakfast buffet, stop back in for great burgers, or satisfy your sweet tooth
Weathervane in Waterville -- for chowderheads like me
Senator Inn in Augusta -- take your politician to a posh place, great food, have him pay though
Mei Lam Lau in Skowhegan -- the way Chinese food should be

tbroderick: There's a lot more to Maine than the Southwest tip! Enjoy the coast, but get up in the lakes and mountains. You're not in Boston anymore; click your heels three times (to get the mud off 'em).

my great-grandmother owned a hotel on goose rocks beach (it was the house next to the tides inn). when she died, my grandfather turned it into a summer home for the whole family, so i would spend every summer up there until i was in college.

i think this is the path in front of the tides inn, so you can imagine our view was the same, one house over.

the house is no longer owned by my family, but my parents and sister still go up there (my mother shows in a gallery up there). i haven't been back in about ten years.

isn't mills rd. part of rte. 9? i've never known it as anything but rte. 9, if it is. mills rd. must be the code name for it amongst the non summer riff-raff.

This is so true. When I was growing up I couldn't wait to get out of here, so I went out west for college. The whole time I was out there I missed the ocean, the mountians were cool and all but home is home ya know. When I came back to live again I realized what it was about Maine that everyone was talking about out west!

It isn't necessarily easy to find a good paying job here though; even if you have education and experience, you'll probably settle for something less-than-average as far as pay goes, if you want to live here. Some folks commute to Boston for work, which is about 2 hours away by train.

Yeah, it's also Rt 9. They have a couple different names for it.

I got lucky. I got into computers young and have worked for a few good companies. EnvisioNet, Adelphia and now Time Warner Cable. Crap, 2 out of 3 went bankrupt, I swear I had nothing to do with it.

Never been. Maine is one of those states (along with Delware) that I forget exists. But i'd like to go because I like lighthouses. I would love to live in a former lighthouse on an island, in fact.

I want to marry a lighthouse keeper
And keep him company.
I want to marry a lighthouse keeper
And live by the side of the sea.
I'll polish his lamp by the light of day
So ships at night can find their way.
I want to marry a lighthouse keeper
Won't that be okay!
We'll take walks along the moonlight bay
Maybe find a treasure too.
I'd love living in a light house,
HOW 'BOUT YOU?
The dream of living in a lighthouse baby, every single day.
The dream of living in a lighthouse,
the white one by the bay.
So if you want to make my dreams come true,
You'll be a lighthouse keeper too.
We could live in a lighthouse
The white one by the bay,hey hey.
Won't that be okay.
Yada tada ta ta ta.

When I lived in Juneau, Alaska the most beautiful beach was up north, north of Eagle Beach about a 2 mile hike after the road ends.

The most beautiful part of Alaska reminded me of the coast of Maine, specifically Monhegan Island.

That is when I realized Maine has always called me back, even my wife after visiting for the first time wants to consider grad school in Maine now.

Maine is calling us both back now. :)

It's never been simple to find a good job in Maine. You'll find that the locals are rather independent, the economy has toughened their outlook. I'm looking forward to introducing Ubuntu to some of the small businesses here, because that's where the action's at.

Route 9's a funny road, it winds all through the state picking up different nicknames on the way. Part I like most, and travel a lot of, is from Bangor to Calais, where it's called "The Airline". Very few people, lots of woods and hills and blueberry fields.
