Hi, does anyone know a web design application that runs on linux and is free. Don't call NVU because it crashes to desktop for some reason and I really like to have a good visual editor + a code editor. suggestions?

I really like the bluefish editor. Reminds me of the old homesite I used to type all my web pages in.

do you want a WYSIWYG editor? I don't think there are many good ones for linux. I think NVU might be the best.

But otherwise I have been using Bluefish and it's great. It's not WYSIWYG, but if you are reasonable knowledgable of html then this is great. It has buttons that do all of the common tags for you. I'd look into it, unless you absolutely must have a WYSIWYG.

Eclipse is pretty good http://www.eclipse.org/proposals/php-ide/ I think there are WYSIWYG editors for Eclipse too

Nvu is now Kompozer:

You can also try Bluefish, Screem, and Amaya.

Some people (like me) use a text editor (Gedit, Kate, Leafpad).

KDE's Quanta Plus (http://quanta.kdewebdev.org/) is a semi-WYSIWYG, with a split screen to look at how it will look AND the code-behind at the same time (after waiting for changes to one to update the other)

Sample Pic:

It isn't perfect, but is probably one of the best web editors.

vim is the best web design tool I've ever used, so long as you get used to Alt+Tab/F5 to refresh your pages. The best thing about Vim is that it is available over SSH, which makes things much faster than having to FTP your files.
