But if the company is not publicly traded and thereby owned by the stockholders, they don't have to do everything to make money as soon as possible if they don't want to.

migla: especially in the age of venture capital-- think Youtube, HUUUUGE money losers (up to a million a month I'd heard).

You're right. Canonical don't need to be making money today if there is a 5% that in 5 years time they could be HUGE. If so venture capital can support them for now. That's how it works.
