Just fallowed this article and I got Windows XP Pro running inside VMware!

Here's the article, but you will need a license of Windows XP Pro.

I have attached two screen shots of it running on my system. As you can see in the second one, I am even able to get and install updates.

One thing that I want to mention though, when starting up, it runs really slow, but once it gets in a groove it's fine. It also seems to lag Ubuntu when the VMware player is running Win XP.

Oh, I almost forgot, instead of making my own VMware Disk I went ahead and used a premade one, the 10g.

You can use www.easyvmx.com (http://www.easyvmx.com) to create virtual machines also

You can use VMWare server (also free but kinda hard to install), where you don't have to rely on a prebuilt virtual machine.

Even better - download vmware Workstation Beta 6 from the vmware website. It's free, very fast and has an easy wizard for creating the machine.

I found the player to be unusable as it didn't allow you to install the "VMWare Tools" on the guest operating system -- meaning the mouse was always very jerky. The server and workstation come with the tools, and believe me, it makes a worlld of difference!

I know it sounds weird, but I installed VMWare Tools in my vmplayer by extracting it from the vmware server package. The reason I had to do this is because for some reason after I installed vmplayer, I couldn't get the server to install. The tools work fine in player though, and my video is a lot smoother.

And you can also use VirtualBox (http://www.virtualbox.org/) apparently. :)
Here's a video tutorial (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ch8X86R6d-g&mode=related&search=).
