I was on the Ubuntu IRC and asked this question, and a guy was pretty sure you could not do this, but I wanted to make sure.
The media player I use is VLC. VLC supports many different formats, but not http in a video format. I am wondering if another media player would support it or if this is just impossible.
Thanks,

if i want to listen to streaming radio, i just enter mplayer hxxp://stupidradiostation.com/stupid.pls in a terminal and it plays. i'm guessing the op is asking about doing the same with video.

The website I am having problems with is cnbc.com. Their videos are just a blank screen with no sound.
A random URL of one of the videos:
http://www.cnbc.com/id/15840232?video=284419133
Thanks for the help,

I consider it to be in extremely poor taste for a website to stream media content without the visitor requesting it.
