Hello all,

As a soon to be college graduate in the Computer Science field, I'm looking to set up my own personal webpage and domain to host my resume', programming projects, and other things for possible employers. I'm looking for a web hosting service that will fit my needs. This site certainly won't be getting thousands of hits, so bandwidth is not a concern. I'd mainly be hosting Java applets and PHP scripts, so PHP support is a must. Price is important; I'd like to keep it under $5 a month. Cheaper is better!

For those who have hosted personal sites before, please share your advice. Thank you :)

I have used 1 and1 web hosting for almost 4 years now and have been very satisfied with their service. I will say they have long hold times on their support number but I've only called it once and it was because I had a brain fart. check them out at http://www.1and1.com

Have you considered hosting it yourself? You can do that with Ubuntu... :D

I've used CoreComm for 10 years - solid as a rock.

I use Geohost (a Telligent Company) to host. I pay $60 a year plus the domain registration for their basic pacakge.

It is hosted out of Alberta, Canada, so if you are in a different country, you might need to do the conversion.

For maximum control, you either want your own server, or if you want cheaper price with good control over the software you run, you should get a Virtual private Server, I've used
unixshell.com which uses XEN virtualization.

He means installing Apache, MySQL, PHP etc - it would mean you're PC would act as a web-server and would have to be on all the time.

I'd suggest Zeeder (http://www.zeeder.com) - great hosting company and support is the best and fastest I've ever seen!

Not only that, but you need a good upload commit, as well as your ISP has to allow webhosting. Most don't unless you pay a little extra.

I use Site5's $5/month deal (http://www.site5.com/in.php?id=27274-13) and have been very pleased with their product and their service.

You can get excellent hosting for free at http://www.jaywebdesigns.com. It's awesome. Just sign up and you get hosting better than many paid hosts. You get control over virtually everything and if you want more space or bandwidth just ask Jay and he'll let you upgrade for free if you put Jaywebdesigns' ads on your page. You can then put the money you saved into your domain name. If you do sign up there, they ask you how you heard of it, just tell them that you were sent there by Drac (my username there).

Yup... that's what I meant... setting up Apache on your home machine (and any other services you'll think you need). I did it with few problems/challenges. Then I got a dynamic DNS so people could type in a URL instead of an IP address. (Since I'm behind a router I also had to forward the ports, but that was easy.)

With this set up I'm also able to log in to my home machine from work (although I don't have any particular reason to - but the thing is, I can!) :D
