While I am currently maxed out on computers, If I was forced to buy a new computer it would be a FUJITSU LifeBook® P1610 Convertible (Notebook/Tablet)
http://store.shopfujitsu.com/fpc/Ecommerce/buildseriesbean.do?series=P1610

It is hard to find a better convertible at 2.2 lbs. simply awesome.

Desktop, custom build. I'm not a laptop fan. I have a cheap one for mail and word processing, but they have no purpose other than that. So I would custom build a desktop.

The question isn't about what I like but specifically what do you like?

What would you buy if you had to buy a computer today? What is your dream computer?

include a picture, link and specific information about the computer you want......include any specifications if you were to buy or to build your own.

buy the way my wife owns a FUJITSU Lifebook T4215 and I really don't know what you guys are talking about.....
http://store.shopfujitsu.com/fpc/Ecommerce/buildseriesbean.do?series=T4215

The fact that the screen is so magnificent is one of the many reasons I like the FUJITSU convertibles over all other computers.

What specific problems did you have with a FUJITSU convertible that you owned, and which model FUJITSU specifically?

One of those Aopen MiniPC. I have an older Shuttle model and love it. Unfortunately my Shuttle is AMD XP Nforce2 based. I want to make the switch to Intel Core 2 Duo 945GM.

custom build.
Not sure of specifics (it's been ages since I've speced out a box), but I would def. would be getting quad core SLI setup, at the least 2TB of storage, and 4gb of ram (provided money isn't part of the equation) :)

Dell. Their Dimension series for a desktop. I've had excellent luck with the two I've had in the past, and I will continue to buy them.

For a laptop, I may stick with Thinkpads, though. I really love the one I have.

Word to the MBPs. But I dunno, until they switch to nVIDIA, it's a real bitch!

I personally wouldn't buy "today," but would wait a month and get a sick laptop from Dell to support their Ubuntu movement. Imagine, a laptop with 100% open hardware... I hope they pull it off. They'll absolutely have my business if they do!

don't really like this question, since there's no parameters for it. Is it a realistic question? As in "what would you buy that would be within your budget?" or is it "What would you buy? What's your dream computer" regardless of price?

I don't really need another computer right now. my laptop and desktop are pretty sweet. I built my desktop. But if I had the money, I might like to get my dream computer. I'd go for a Core 2 Duo extreme and overclock it. 4-8GB of RAM, get 6 or 7 hard drives and put them in a RAID 5/6 array. the new 8800GTS from nvidia.

It's easy to build a dream computer. The question is really "what would you not put in your dream computer?" And what I wouldn't put in it is a quad core processor. It simply doesn't have any reasonable applications yet, and by the time it does, there will be better models out there for me to build another computer with. I wouldn't get liquid cooling. It's a huge hassle. I wouldn't bank on RAID for performance increases. It can be quite risky. I find it more useful to use it's redundancy features to keep my data safe.

I too don't need a new machine - because moving to Ubuntu over the past year has breathed new life into the several I already own, including an old P3 desktop and a four-year old vanilla intel-based laptop that was still running Windows 2000. I have bought myself a couple of new HDDs, a nVidia GeForce card and a 26 inch wide-screen monitor with the money I have saved by not upgrading to Vista. (Now that I have actually written that, it doesn't actually make a lot of sense as I was never planning to go to vista anyway. Nevermind!)

If I was to get a new machine, say for my wife, it would be one of the Ubuntu desktops from Dell (if they ever offer them in Australia). And that would be more to support the "war effort", as another poster put it.

I have wondered about a thing,, whats the meaning of having an hardcore computer with linux ? I mean, there arent any games for linux that needs hardcore hardware, the software does not need the hardware either.. so a mid computer would do it.. enough for ET, Doom3 and Q4.. there is no meaning, for me, to have an hardcore computer.. I dont see how you could need all the hardware power for the software and the games for linux, you dont need it anyway.

You could use it for apps as Maya, Houdini, XSI, Shake, Flame :) but for the majority of people you are prolly right though :p

Of course I would only buy this for my wife, whose Fujitsu Lifebook T4215 is a bit heavy for her at 4.3 lbs, this one is at 2.2 lbs....

For myself I enjoy recycling old computers, old Windows or old Apple computers and loading Linux on them.

Remember to recycle.

Whatever looks like a good deal on sites like TigerDirect, PCMall, or even IBM Retirees (I'm one) refurbs & returns.

For "ordinary desktop computer users" like me, this is a 1 gHz Pentium, 512 mb, 4 gb and 80 gb hard drive (ready for partitioning for multi Ubuntu's), 17" 1280x1024 LCD.

Runs nice and fast on Feisty, crisp scrolling, .... Yes, I do applications like Office, everything Internet, digital photos, LAN file sharing and don't do games and am not into eye candy.

I've another 1.2 gHz quad boot Dapper, Feisty, early Gutsy packages & kernel, and *******. Also runs nice and fast but would like a larger LCD.

If and when Feisty or Gutsy ever get persistent running, I've a 2 gHz P4 XP ready to go; a lot of the time running CD Live I forget it's not installed on the hard drive.

Plus a Thinkpad Laptop dual booted XP and Feisty.

Why so many? Each had different bugs with Feisty to post on Launchpad, mostly fixed with workarounds so far and not with "real fixes". There's some stated goal about polishing for Gutsy - I've got a bunch of scenarios ready to try, all of which fail Feisty.

Cheers, Jerry:)

Honestly, I'd rebuy my current laptop but max out the specs. I am perfectly happy with it, and it's almost a year old!

Dell XPS-m1210 btw, but I am running a Core Duo, not Core 2 Duo. Maybe a faster HD as well, but 2gig's of ram is doing ok for now. But I really love this thing. And recently jumping on the Ubuntu train, this thing is SNAPPY!
