well don't look at the pre-N or super-G cards then.
WIFI and Linux is not a good combination in my experience [-X

You need to know the chipset. Prism54, atheros, and many others work out-of-the-box. Most of those that do not work out-of-the-box work fine with ndiswrapper.

do you have a slot in your laptop that could house the centrino network card (intel 2200 b/g) those work great in ubuntu.

Basically what you must know it that it isn't easy. The best thing is to buy the EXACT card that would work off the internet at some place that takes returns if they give you the wrong model number.

A word of advise from someone who changed from wired ethernet to wireless. Think very carefully before doing so. Try and borrow some equipement and see if it suits you. It is still comparitively expensive and its performance is flakey.

I am using D-link gear and I am have problems with the network going down. Linux finds the card , finds the AP goes ok then 5 minute wait while it reconnects and this occurs at least twice hourly. I have relocated the equipment , added a booster ,tried other brands, stood on my head and haved not resolved it .

So think before you leap:)

I agree. I have NEVER seen a wirless card that will make me give up the ethernet chord on my desktop.

A laptop is a different story though. There the new centrino stuff isn't crap.
