Hi,

I am looking for suggestions from the Ubuntu community regarding good laptop models. I want to install Ubuntu in it. I need wireless support with at least 512 MB of RAM, DVD combo, >40gb HDD. Lightweight.

Your suggestions are greatly appreciated.

I really enjoy my emachines (M5312) but sadly after dealing with their support team I am hesitant to suggest them as a retailer. Wireless works (using ndiswrapper - broadcom driver). If you do buy an emachines DO NOT buy this model. It has a faulty heat-sink / fan which causes over heating. The other models, as far as I've researched, are fine however.

You should really search the forum before asking such a question. Your question has been asked many, many times. In fact, there is a question just like yours that was listed only about 5 threads down from this thread (note: by the time you read this, this will no doubt change).

If you have a specific question about a specific laptop, then ask. But asking this question over and over and over again gets old really fast. Again, nothing against you, but do please search the forum before asking questions.

Yeah, sorry for not searching before. I am not looking at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/HardwareSupportMachinesLaptops

Btw, I am actually very specific about the power management, wireless and video working under Linux.

Unfortunately that wiki pages lacks information for IBM laptops. Could someone throw light on this one?

I second that. Toshiba comes with Nvidia (intel and ati graphics suck).

I booted the live CD on my Compaq Presario laptop the other night, and it worked like a charm. I didn't have the wireless card in it at the time.
