View Full Version : No Dell+Ubuntu if you're in the UK.

Shortly after the Dell-Ubuntu announcement, I emailed Dell UK to ask to politely ask how soon it would be possible to order a Ubuntu machine.

I got a rather snippy reply (just short of being rude - IMO) that said they currently had no plans to offer Linux on their machines, apart from some servers.

I was a bit miffed at this, and thought perhaps I'd got a staff member who wasn't up to speed on the news. But apparently he was much more up to speed than I thought.

If you're in the UK, Dell will NOT, in fact, sell you a Ubuntu PC.

There are already entries on Dell's ideastorm site about extending the offering:

http://www.ideastorm.com/article/show/66735/Extend_offers_like_Linux_preinstallation_to_the_UK __Europe
http://www.ideastorm.com/article/show/66672/Sells_Linux_PCs_Wordwide__not_only_the_United_Stat es

We just need to keep up the pressure and let them know there's a demand. (Thanks to the ubuntu-uk mailing list for those links!)

Perhaps they're just trialing things in the US to gauge popularity - if it is reasonably successful, then they'll expand. Costs them less if things blow up I suppose.

As if users in the UK or Europe didn't vote for this idea :(

It's sad but at least some uk ubuntu laptop salesmen will continue to make sales.

don't forget most of this is confidence building and us in the uk will benifit from the drivers etc.

although it wouldn't hurt to phone them up each week asking for an ubuntu machine.

Actually I would assume that they would do better with Linux in the EU than US. After all Ubuntu is based in the Isle of Man and not in the US not to mention that there is a much stronger governmental opposition to Windows in the EU than there is in the US.

No word yet on Canada as far as I can see. But since my 2000 era Dell Dimension 4100 runs Ubuntu without a hitch I suppose I can wait.
My daughter's got a Dimension 8200 she's going to hand down to me someday so hopefully that'll be the next Linux box around here.
