one of the hex codes for decoding HD-DVDs was posted online, on the popular site Digg. That story was removed from the community-driven news site. All hell proceeded to break loose, with nearly every popular story on the site being about the takedown, the reprisals, and a general massive flame war.

I'm sorry to tell you this is pretty old news...

Nah it's nowhere near as bad as that - it's functioning perfectly normally. There was a time when people kept posting the number, and Digg admins kept removing the stories containing it, but now Kevin Rose has said they're not going to bother taking it down any more, and that they're willing to stand by the Digg community and stand up to the lawyers who are threatening them rather than let them walk all over Digg. The lawyers threatening Digg and other sites have realise that there's no way they can sue everyone who posted / linked to the number, and have backed off for now at least.

It's over... it lasted for a few hours, at one point the first 2 or 3 pages were all AACS keys, but then as soon as Kevin conceded, it died down. We have a discussion of it already in this section... I think the thread was called "hd-dvd fiasco"?

The media is way slow. It lasted for a few hours on digg and died down more than 24 hours ago, at the peak of which Wikipedia even had to lock all of its digg, HDDVD, AACS related articles.

OT (quite a bit...)

If you find yourself being chased by a dog while walking, jogging or bicycling, stop, turn toward dog, point, and firmly say "No!" or "Go home!". Repeat as needed.
This is effective even for dogs that do not speak English

But now, after seeing hundreds of stories and reading thousands of comments, you’ve made it clear. You’d rather see Digg go down fighting than bow down to a bigger company. We hear you, and effective immediately we won’t delete stories or comments containing the code and will deal with whatever the consequences might be.

If we lose, then what the hell, at least we died trying.

You have to have respect for that person just based on that alone :P

I think enough folks are just kinda tired of being bullied by lawyers and large companies on the internet.
