OK. It is not Toshiba HQ but a regional operation in Italy. And it is not a decison but a discussion. But still good to see a little more momentum.

This is how Google translates the original Italian article:
“We have grown in way consisting in a market that has recorded inferior rates development to the expectations, in which the war for the market to share is made often and gladly on the price, a requirement that is not priority for Toshiba”. In the words of Luigi Cattaneo, Country Manager for Italy of the Division Systems Computer of the Japanese society, is all the pride in order to have brought back a brand historical of the portable computers to the levels of some year ago and in order to play the future to the standard of a strategy (contraddistinta from the slogan “Leading Innovation”) that it promises to the customers, consumer and business, services and products superior in quality to the average. It turns out you that the Italian branch (office) (than with Spain and Portugal has given life to the Mediterranean Region in Toshiba Europe) can put in field is in important effects: the turnover of fiscal year 2006 finished 31 to March has been of 245 million euro, in climb of 3% regarding the previous year, while it is of 17% the leap in ahead to the voice sold units: beyond 312mila in total, that 14% of the market are been worth to the Asian multinational (given Sirmi), third after Acer and Hp, than entirety they succeed in to cover approximately 50% of the portable question of PC in Italy. It turns out important to you, it has specified Cattaneo, because better of the averages than market and, above all, coinciding with one more than discreet marginality.

Toshiba in Italy makes therefore useful in the computers and it makes them also thanks to a rich build-up kit (peripheral ags and of varied kind, camcorder and comprised Mp3 readers), that it sells in parallel, for total approximately 10 million euro entrances, to the notebook of the family Tecra, Satellite, Portégé and Qosmio. 2006, moreover, have seen the debut to catalogue of the videoproiettori inherit to you from the Consumer Division and, from February, of the new ones smartphone it bases to you on Mobile the Windows platform of Microsoft. The bases in order to continue the race ulteriorly are therefore all and are the same Cattaneo to reassume them in forecasts: “we head to still grow at the same levels of 2006, is in volume that in value, posizionandoci in wraps mean high of several the segments that we go to cover. Where we will focus our efforts? In particular on the user business, where we are the fourth supplier in Italy. Comparto the Smb, but, is much conditioning from the pressure on the prices to the distribution, where is arrives to you to inferior quotations to the 400 euro (excluded Vat, ndr) and therefore our engagement on the channel, towards approximately 16.000 retailers with which we have assets relations, will have to be still greater, to the par of the investments puttinges to budget for the marketing initiatives, that five the million euro will salt in the order of”.

In attended of the necessary verifications of the field, at the market, in short, Toshiba sendes to a “message” much explicit one that is articulated on two lines guides, rivendicate like only and distintive: products of elevated declared profile with the plus of the robustness, of the reliability (“the failure installments of notebook the Toshiba - it has still emphasized Cattaneo - are of 0.6% regarding 0.9% mean of all the producers”) and of the being consistent to the European norms in terms of impact it acclimatizes them and a business strategy them that a flower to the eyelet has in the attendance post sale in order to guarantee times of gives back of blots some subject to repair within the five days. The strategy on the paper is clear and, official admission of Cattaneo, soon could have an ulterior arrow in just the arc, Linux: “to the notebook it bases to you on operating system open source we are thinking, of it we are speaking with the Corporation and we are estimating carefully the requirements that arrive from the question. It is a business upgrades them to which we cannot and we want close the door in face”.

Asian computer makers are pretty supportive of Linux. Acer sells Linpus based machines, Sony (used to?) has TurboLinux. Chinese government has decreed that all machines sold in China have to be Linux friendly. Maybe Dell will force them to start offering those systems in the EU and US.

Canonical is on a world tour of sort and I think they are talking to most of the manufacturers. I wouldn't be surprised to see Ubuntu shipping from a number of companies in the next year or two.
