Imagine a book with an unusual cover. Look! It has colorful knobs and buttons. It has sliders and holographic images! People of all ages enjoy twisting and pushing the knobs, buttons and sliders. They spend many hours mesmerized by the holographic images. They think they know a lot about the book.

Why then do they never open the cover? Most of the people just satisfy themselves with the pretty colors. Others feel themselves inadequate to look inside. The truth, though, is that even when the people are at their most enthusiastic, when the cover is accidentally grabbed by the edge, it doesn't open. The book is locked shut.

There was a little man who was the keeper of the book. Every so often he came and unlocked it. He might have written in it but no one knew for sure what he did. Usually when he locked it again the cover had changed. The people praised him highly for moving the colors or adding new buttons.

One time there was even a new springy thing on the cover. What a marvelous change! The people played with the colorful book cover and never tried to read the book or even open it. The book was locked shut.
