I saw a brief Photoshop tutorial on TV last week about using bump-mapping to create a "cast-iron" effect. I used GIMP to apply the techniques and made my own Iron-Ubuntu Wallpaper. Because of the 'buffed-metal' border, it works well with transparent panels as the regular default font shows up well - almost as if the writing is etched into the metal!

I guess my question is, any ideas on good window and icon themes that will go with this desktop? I had been using bright blue icons and stuff with my last desktop, but they definitely do not look good with my new creation.

First proper poke around Fluxbox (whichever outdated version is in the Etch repos!) on my Debian box. I must say that I'm very impressed. Once I'd figured out how to execute gtk-theme-switch2 on startup (I'm a Murrine addict) and installed the Noir (http://customize.org/fluxbox/themes/49534) theme it all became so much better :D

Built-in transparencies rock, but the slit/taskbar/whatever is sill bewildering me. I'm sure it's easy once you know how!

I like the sides of the windows, it's kind of like this theme from KDE-looks.org:

http://www.kde-look.org/content/show.php/E2007?content=57093

I wish I knew how to do that for xfce (I don't think it's possible?), I guess I would have to use a different window manager/theme engine.

I was tired of reading in forums how everyone thinks that KDE is the only option for a customized desktop with all of the eye candy, so I was looking through KDE-look.org to see what all the fuss was about, and I have to admit, there were some nice themes like the one that your theme looks similar too, and a few others, but it's nice to see unique themes made for other window managers.

The 2nd panel is a regular gnome panel sized larger, with auto hide.
To keep too many pixels from showing you can change it in:
System -> Configuration Editor -> Apps -> Panel -> Top Levels -> panel# -> auto hide size set to 0.

It's very easy

Under any window manager, run the command icewm --replace metacity

You can replace icewm and metacity with any window manager of course.
You have to know I didn't make this theme, I only ported it: http://gnome-look.org/content/show.php/Kore+Suite?content=54701

That once seems to have been submitted recently (Apr 28) it's likely it used Kore as a starting idea.

Natively, you can do some things with XFCE too, but I find the window manager is kinda hard to theme for. Also, the panel background must be defined within the GTK theme. IceWM is pure pixmaps so its easy to theme

crimesaucer
May 2nd, 2007, 02:18 AM
The gnome version looks even better then the KDE version.

I've been thinking about learning to make some themes for a different theme engine/window manager, since I didn't think xfce was much more theme-able then what I've already done to my versions (top page 3), other then new color palettes for the gtk widgets, or different gradient box fills.

I just like the way the sides of those windows look, so I guess I should learn how to theme for the pixmap engine or some other theme engines that can use images. But I just really like the feel of xfce4.4

EDIT- I'm wondering if there is an option in Emerald where I could change the sides of my windows borders because that is basically the feature that I'm really wanting. I'm going to look into this, or suggest it to the Beryl staff. Or maybe suggest an Emerald theme manager/engine that can draw the shadows/glass transparencies in the same way it does for the top title bar, but hopefully on all 4 sides.

EDIT 2- like this, except with the same glass effects on the sides.

@ BOBSONATOR- I saw the K.Mandla .conkyrc on that thread and thought it was really nice looking too. I actually changed mine after seeing it and made my time and date a larger sized font also.

Anyway, that is a nice looking theme/desktop.

Thanks man, i know that script rocks!

Thanks man, i know that script rocks!

Yeah, I modified my script the moment after seeing it so that I could see my time and date easier.

But when I redo my .conkyrc in the future, I'm going to use that exact code (${time %H:%M}) to just show the time (hours/minutes), and place it in a different corner then the rest of my script by using align right, and align center and making my maximum_width = 1200

I might try a version of it today.

its just Tango. you'll find it in the repos.

then download this (http://gnome-look.org/content/show.php/Tango-OldPlainGray?content=46564) icon set (ie Tango-oldplaingrey). after you've downloaded and extracted the theme, edit the index.theme file so that it says 'Inherits=Tango'. then place the theme in /usr/share/themes.

i stand corrected then. on the other hand, most of those icons in the screenshot belong to Tango so it doesn't really matter. see screenshot. plus, if its on a different distro, it will have very slightly different naming conventions, so installing Tango + Tango-oldplaingrey is the current most apt solution.

I have a rotating collection of wallpapers, but here's what my desktop looks like at this moment.

Theme: Nuvola

Wallpaper: The New Kids, a painting by Dodgers pitcher Brett Tonko, snagged from the Dodgers Wallpaper page (http://losangeles.dodgers.mlb.com/la/fan_forum/wallpapers.jsp) (and yes, I'm a Dodger fan living in Red Sox Nation. I flat out REFUSE to stop Thinking Blue)

Also running Beryl and Screenlets. Wallpaper rotation is via wallpaper-tray. The Now Playing Screenlet is reflecting a very appropriate song playing in Amarok, Randy Newman's I Love L.A..

I re-wrote another one of my themes, it's similar to the one I used for most of the last two months, except I have also used Firefox userChrome.css to make it look better in the tab-bar, and so I could create a perfect gradient that starts in the bg[normal], and evenly fades into the base[normal] like the way it looks in my Thunar File System.

Gladly. =] Lemme know if you have any issues w/ getting it working, you must enable audacious during compiling, but there is an alternative using audtool that is supposed to work if you don't care for compiling from source.

# Use pseudo transparency with own_window?
own_window_transparent yes

# If own_window_transparent is set to no, you can set the background colour here
own_window_colour hotpink

# If own_window is yes, these window manager hints may be used
#own_window_hints undecorated,below,sticky,skip_taskbar,skip_pager

# Use double buffering (reduces flicker, may not work for everyone)
double_buffer yes

# Minimum size of text area
minimum_size 130 5

# Draw shades?
draw_shades yes

# Draw outlines?
draw_outline no

# Draw borders around text
draw_borders no

# Stippled borders?
stippled_borders 5

# border margins
border_margin 5

# border width
border_width 1

# Default colors and also border colors
default_color white
default_shade_color black
default_outline_color white

# Text alignment, other possible values are commented
#alignment top_left
#alignment top_right
alignment bottom_left
#alignment bottom_right

# Gap between borders of screen and text
# same thing as passing -x at command line
gap_x 12
gap_y 12

# Subtract file system buffers from used memory?
no_buffers yes

# set to yes if you want all text to be in uppercase
uppercase no

# number of cpu samples to average
# set to 1 to disable averaging
cpu_avg_samples 2

# number of net samples to average
# set to 1 to disable averaging
net_avg_samples 2

# Force UTF8? note that UTF8 support required XFT
override_utf8_locale no

# Add spaces to keep things from moving about? This only affects certain objects.
use_spacer yes

TEXT
${color slate grey}audacious:
${color }$audacious_title
${color }${audacious_bar 3,105}
${color }$audacious_status ${color slate grey}- ${color }${audacious_position}${color slate grey}/${color }${audacious_length} ${color slate grey}

Many thanks, I'm going to try compiling it, how exactly did you enable it?

Cheers

Edit - The audtool works fine actually. Thanks

Looks good, I was thinking a nice wallpaper theme for it would be either coffee beans, mocha lattes with foam, or gourmet chocolates. Like a really nice photograph of chocolate desserts and coffee drinks. I was going to find a nice image to go in the tab bar where I have the bamboo image, maybe something like coffee beans.

I was just messing around, trying something new. I'm still in love with my theme that I had posted a few posts above that one.

In fact, after making that chocolate one, I've mostly been working on a Japaneses Theme that gos with that Bamboo tab bar image that I used in the chocolate one. I just can't find the correct color to match it yet. I was gonna make it like Firefox's Black Japan, but the theme is so difficult to look at for a long time, it hurts the eyes.

I got the taskbar so transparent-looking by matching the solid colour used by the bar to that of the wallpaper. It's a little hard for me to explain, so if you want to know more, let me know.

The single Ubuntu logo is just the icon for the Main Menu. Go to the panel, click on add to panel and type in the search bar "Main Menu" add it and there you have it. (Remove the other menu bar if you do this though).

(Sorry if my explanation was a little dumbed down but you can never be to sure just how much people know).

I was inspired and just had to make a brown theme.

Modified crux theme colors, gartoon icons.
Wallpaper from autumnpixels.com.
Brown xmms theme ( http://themes.freshmeat.net/projects/brown/ ) running on Audacious.
Music from remix.kwed.org, "freeware" c64 remixes. Check it out if you like.
Surfing with firefox using the system colors

P.S. The picture used for the background image of the terminal, I have no clue where it's from. Some crazy Super Mario art I found on the net a while back...

I finally got around to making that theme more like a mocha java like I had said earlier. It was really easy using Firefox userChrome.css and a GIMP made image.

I still need to fix the xfce-theme a bit, and I might add some cinnamon colored accents to some things.

EDIT- I might also make a white Emerald window theme (like foamed milk) and add a cinnamon tint to it using the tru glass theme engine.

POST EDIT- Well, the white foam was difficult to make look good, but I made a better matching Emerald and might try the white foam one again latter:

Well, ZeroXR is actually more to do with my job in pharmacy and Buddhist philosophy... An extended state of "Zero", where the mind is free of worry and anger.

The name of my laptop, however, is in honor of the 4 mystic animals of Asian mythology. Suzaku being the vermilion bird (phoenix) of the South.

Hi All,
Since I've been pretty busy with the birth of my new daughter; I haven't had a lot of time to tinker around with a desktop; although I have a fairly decent setup now for everything that I like. The screenshot originally could have been taken as not work safe; so I just strategically placed my firefox window so there is no one who would be offended. Just check the link for the wallpaper to see it fully- where I won't be responsible for it ;)

Nothing really fancy aside from a fresh Kubuntu install with native transparency and a simply conky setup that I've discovered that I like, especially since I finally installed MPD which has now become my premiere music player. If anyone wants the .conkyrc, just drop me a private message and I can send it, didn't want to spam the board too much.

Window Styles are all just standard KDE with transparency enabled and solarization (It's a nice little look).

How did you get the transparent menu ?

I don't think it's transparent. See how the edges don't line up. It gives the appearance though. If you want transparent menus, one quick fix is to use beryl. However, they aren't very useful. I have mine about 20% transparent (ie 80% not) and much more than that and they are hard to read - especially if you have anything open behind them.

I've always wanted to try a orange theme but I've never gotten around finding a orange wallpaper that I like....they've always been to "vibrant" or "shiny". But this one suited me fine...kind of nice and smooth orange shade, not to vibrant.

Wallpaper: http://interfacelift.com
Theme: Orange-look a gtk theme found on gnome-look.
Icons: Human icon theme.
Yab icons: a little compilation from here and there.
Xfwm: Wallis came default with xfce4
Compsit: Xfce builtin compositor...no beryl/compiz shiet.

Very nice !!

I'm just testing xubuntu and so far very happy with the responsiveness and the fact that XFCE has come a long way into becoming a functional desktop. Everything is nearly default, installed automatix and added SMPlayer fronted for Mplayer which makes Mplayer behave a lot like Windows Media Player/Media Player Classic. BMP player is using MP11 winamp skin which can be found on deviantart, wallpaper is some random Vista wallpaper I found.
