I have posted on the kubuntu sub section of this forum the following :
I have been a kubuntu user for a month or so and I'm quite happy with it. I believe the distro goes in the right direction. However, there are a few problems which might be very confusing for new comers (for both ubuntu and kubuntu users). I hope people from the Ubuntu/Kubuntu team will read this.
1. Names and meaning. "Ubuntu" is used for the main project and for the Gnome oriented distro. "Kubuntu" is used for the KDE oriented distro. The problem is "Ubuntu" is also used for the distribution's core, the part shared by the Gnome and KDE distro. It is very confusing for new comers especially the ones attracted by the kubuntu project.
Maybe it will be a good idea to find a new name for the core something like the U-core, Ubuntu-Core or whatever.
2. The sites from both Gnome and Kde distro need some improvements.
For the reason mentionned above, www.ubuntulinux.org is also very confusing, explaining what is the general project's purpose and goal and describing it this way : "Ubuntu includes more than 1,000 pieces of software, starting with the Linux kernel version 2.6 and Gnome 2.10". In a way,it's not true anymore, it is more than that since it is the core of two distros and also the gnome oriented distro.
Kubuntu site looks somehow a minimal version of the ubuntu site and lacks most of the interesting stuff for people looking for some details about the distro : no screenshot, no forum (accessible from the faq only), no link for detailled list of packages, no direct link to support (unlike the ubuntu site), no direct link for a list of the developpers and contributors.
Of course, what people expect to see on a particular website and what a linux team leading a project such ubuntu/kubuntu is willing to show may vary. But, once again, I think both websites may be largely improved.
3. The forum and especially the tiny kubuntu section is inadequate. Because the confusion (core/gnome side), I believe some kubuntu users feel a lil bit lost and like in a reserve. Which leads them most of the time to post more or less anything about kubuntu in the tiny section when they could post everything not strictly kde related in other general sections.
I understand the team does not want to separate both projects and it's fine with me but, at this point, things can be done to clarify and improve things keeping in mind new comers (to the distros but also to Linux).
I took time to post here because I like my distro. I'm in no way a Kde zealot. Both sides can benefit from improvements needed. I'm ready to help in any way I can if necessary to make the project better.
Well that's about it Thank you for reading me.
I have been told http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?p=216990#post216990 for the point 3 (about the forum) it might be wise to post here. So here I am ;-)
For the first two points if you feel they don't belong here, well, just ignore them but I do encourage both ubuntu and kubuntu users to give feedback.
By the way if you know any way to contact the author(s) of the kubuntu website, let me know. I have found no mention of him/them on the main page or the faq.
Thank you again, have a nice (k)ubuntu day ;-)
