View Full Version : Microsoft Exchange Alternative?

Hmm, not sure if this is the right forum, but I guess an Admin can move it if I'm wrong...


Basically, I want an open source alternative to Microsoft Exchange for Ubuntu 7.04 ("Feisty Fawn"), and I was wondering if someone could suggest something (preferably something that relatively easy to install).

If it's any help, the specific reason I want such a program is because I own my own domain and I would like to setup "push" e-mail using my domain, the said software and my Pocket PC (which supports Microsoft's "DirectPush" technology) - as I understand it, Microsoft Exchange or a third-party alternative will enable me to accomplish this.


Worse-case scenario, can someone suggest such a program for Microsoft Windows XP: Professional (I currently run a dual-boot system)?

There are some like Zimbra, Scalix, OpenGroupware, Open-Xchange, more here (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:Free_groupware). I don't know if they do push email specifically, though. You might have to ask on their respective forums. I have heard that there are some plugins that enable the WM features. Also, the people in the the server and security forum could help you more: http://ubuntuforums.org/forumdisplay.php?f=7

I own the domain through which my e-mail addresses are hosted, and they are setup as IMAP e-mail addresses, so is it really even worth setting-up an Exchange-type system, or would I be better just to stick with the IMAP thing?

The two big free software groupware servers are Kolab and OpenGroupware. Since you want to deal with e-mail I'd say Kolab, since the later lacks e-mail OOTB.

A good commercial alternative is kerio (http://www.kerio.com). It is not free, but it is well supported in many different distributions.
