Don't know if you have already seen this, but there is a UK petition to the government to use the open document format/pdf in all electronic documents.

If you agree with this and you're a UK resident, why not sign the petition at:

http://petitions.pm.gov.uk/opendoc/

Very surprised it only has so few signatures, are people not bothered in using proprietary formats?

Thanks

Thanks for the info - How do you find out what petitions are currently underway? It seems like pure fluke that I have found out about them

either browse here: http://petitions.pm.gov.uk/list or use the seach box on the same page, it allows you to break things down by area.

Does anybody have any idea how we can get this out there to get larger numbers of signee's?

Ha! That would would be a more sensible move than a lot that he's done over the past 10 years, but I digress...

I didn't see this one but made a similar one a while back called OpenXML

It was
We the undersigned petition the Prime Minister to: 'Stop Microsoft Getting OpenXML Ratified As An International Standard'

Microsoft Office formats have been closed to restrict
competition so no competing products could use these formats
correctly and Microsoft Office had to be purchased to maintain
compatibility. An open standard called OpenDocument was
developed so users were not restricted to only one software
suite and governments, educational bodies, etc were able to use
open formats that were documented and not liable to change
ensuring ongoing compatibility. To stop this Microsoft has
developed its own standard "OpenXML" which is still
patent-encumbered and is trying to fast-track its ISO
ratification so they can continue to keep Microsoft Office as
the major office application and the Opendocument format would
be redundant. This cannot be allowed to happen and is clearly
an attempt by Microsoft to cling on to their unfair vendor
lock-in.

They rejected saying it was potentially false, libellous or defamatory. I can't see anything in there that can't be proven so it is obviously not false, libellous or defamatory. Get labour out quick.

Signed. ODF/PDF is important, particularly for communications governed by the freedom of information act. What is free about closed formats?
