Nasa's World Wind, but it's only for windows I think. It might work under wine though.

If you just want access to the satellite/aerial images take a look at < Flash Earth >, it's a web site rather than an app., but uses the same images as Google Earth. Also there's Google maps, if you need to locate somewhere on the map first. Hope these ideas help.

NASA has Open Sourced World Wind, dunno about the license though.

Actually, it's my being curious to see if there is a more updated image. i do not know when Google Earth takes it's images, but they have not changed in over 6 or 7 months and all winter there was no snow in the images:confused: when there should have been:confused:

They most likely do not control when the images get released and are constrained by that.
My brothers subdevision is still a cornfield?

These images are not realtime. Depending on where you are at some of them are years old. It takes a lot of time and money to update these. Basically for free you just take what you can get. You have to pay thousands of dollars if you want realtime images.

I think the FSF is working on a Free Google Earth client. But you'd just get Google Earth's photos.

Yahoo and MS offer alternatives, too.

All unclassified software written for U.S. government projects must be released to the public domain.

No, at least with MS he is correct... in fact, live local is MUCH nicer than google earth IMHO: http://local.live.com/default.aspx
