I need a good book for beginners, any suggestions.

I hear a Ubuntu Dapper for Dummies book is due out this month or next, is that a good place to start or is there something better?

Thanks for all the help folks.

I'm surprised people are suggesting specific Ubuntu books. I'd think it'd be more helpful if you he got a general unix one.

For Linux in general I have found LPI Linux Certification In A Nutshell (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0596005288?ie=UTF8&tag=musicpages&linkCode=as2&camp=1789&creative=9325&creativeASIN=0596005288) helpful

Official Ubuntu Book - good for beginners.

Here's a review: http://www.linux-tutorial.info/modules.php?name=MReviews&op=show&rid=18

Also, this book is licensed under the Creative Commons license and is therefore supposedly free as an ebook. I don't know how to go about obtaining a free e-copy though. If you can find one then you can check it out free before deciding to buy.

Edit:

I've been using Ubuntu for a while and don't need to buy a book for the basics. Can anyone recommend something for the intermediate/advanced user? What about the Ubuntu Linux Bible (http://www.amazon.co.uk/Ubuntu-Linux-Bible-Wiley/dp/0470038993/ref=pd_bbs_sr_6/203-0949678-4955919?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1177524602&sr=8-6)?

I have both this and the Ubuntu Linux Bible. The Ubuntu Linux Bible I'm happy to recommend, Ubuntu Unleashed I'm not.

The guy who wrote Ubuntu Unleashed writes for Linux Format and normally I think he writes well. Unfortunately I felt that Ubuntu Unleashed is just Fedora Unleashed (which he'd previously written) rehashed. Someone has gone through the original book and simply changed the word Fedora to Ubuntu. There are some glaring errors ...such as indicating that the package manager is Yum at one point, and spending a section on XMMS while saying almost nothing about Rhythmbox. Nothing against XMMS, however as it stands it ain't the Ubuntu default music player, indeed it ain't even in the default install at all.
There's useful information in the book true, but too often I find it irritating simply because it's been carelessly put together.

i guess havent read it so thoroughly. i think the most helpful sections are for general linux systems, though, like networking, printing, etc

Hi

I have seen "Ubuntu Unleashed " available as an ebook. I think it was a chm file -- compiled html.

Lost the link.

Thanks for all the suggestions I went to the brick and mortar store today and compared several books and ended up with the Ubuntu Linux Bible. It's perfect for someone like me who is brand new to Linux but very familiar with computers and comfortable with hacking around in a command line or editing code.
The other books seemed more geared towards someone "getting their hands dirty behind the gui" for the first time.

Linux Phrasebook works very well for me. It helps you work out the command line with examples of how to do it ...
