Open Source Forums - looking for suggestions

Can anyone suggest an open source, host-it-yourself forums software, that also has post-by-email abilities?

I'm familiar with PHPBB and know they've got a "notify of responses by email" ability, but I'm hoping for a set up where you can *reply* by email as well. (Heck, mabye phpbb even has this by now, but I don't know.)

Or even just some general open source forums suggestions would be very helpful. Then I could try them out and see if they have what I need.

I'm hoping a Yahoo Group I'm part of will move to a forum setup - I'm hoping I can come up with some suggestions for the folks who love the reply-by-email ability. I detest the Yahoo Groups layout - it's like the archaic AOL bulletin boards!

Never used posting by email but a search of their forums revealed this (http://www.simplemachines.org/community/index.php?topic=40650.0)

punBB also has the notify email... it has a community base so it's possible someone has written a plug in to reply by email..

I personally am a big fan of punBB. It's very simple and straightforward, reminds me a lot of gnome in that regard, haha.

Simple Machines clearly has a mod to do what I need.

Looks like punBB is very basic (in a good way), "put in what you want" setup. I'll have to dig deeper to see if it's got a "post reply" function too.

Again, thank you all! See? I'd heard of phpBB, and phorum, and ikonboard, but Simple Machines and punBB are both totally new to me. I'll probalby give them both a try and see if either (or both) do exactly what I want.

I wouldn't use phpbb personally. It's nowhere near as customizable or stable as SMF. I would ALWAYS use SMF. I think it's almost as good as vbulletin, and you don't have to pay for it :)

The Zenwalk Forums now use SMF, and I was amazed at what it is now capable of. It looks, handles, and feels a lot like vBulletin, and appears at first glance to have a good 95% of the features that vBulletin has. I would like to see Ubuntugeeks opinion on this.

The new phpBB is really good, completely different from phpBB2. It's not released yet (final anyway), but the Beta5 is out - they say not to use it ... but it's not like a web app can lock up or get thrown back to CLI =D.

Does anyone know when phpBB3 will be released?
