I have been looking for a good PDA and I think Motoming (http://direct.motorola.com/hellomoto/motomingedge/) is really nice. It's a touchscreen phone, is Linux-based, and is not expensive.

It's just that, even if it is Linux-based, I do not know if I can sync it with Ubuntu. I want to sync data such as appointments, contacts, tasks, and notes.

Have you heard about Motoming? Is it advisable for an Ubuntu user to buy that?

hmm... looks nice. Cant say that I have any experience with it though. But I have been looking at a phone that's Linux based. Will look into it a bit.

EDIT: Although the Phone tools on their website is for Window 200....

Damn!

I can't find Linux support for this Linux-based mobile phone!

All I found was how to mount it (http://www.djlosch.com/article_Review:_Motorola_A1200_Ming_Handheld) and I'm not even sure if that guide works.

Why aren't Linux-based mobile phones compatible with Linux??? Tell me!

damn ironic isn't it...

Actually, it isn't just the Ming but even the newer linux based phone Moto ROKR E6 which has problems syncing with linux. Aarrggh... when will they fix the smartphone/PDA PIM sync feature in Ubuntu. when when? :'(

I thought I seen this phone 2 years ago in Hong Kong.... maybe this is a new version? And yes I think it is really important for ubuntu and linux in general to with better sync support. So far running a local Funambol SyncML server is the best way to go, and I hope the http://www.conduit-project.org/ will evolve...

Shouldn't you be reading reviews at Cnet, amazon, etc. etc. instead of asking us??

Usually, the best Ubuntu support is available for the most popular of products. Do not buy a product no one has heard of. If a large part of the Ubuntu community owns a product that you're interested in, buy the same thing. It is more likely that something will be supported if many other people use it too. Just make sure you find something you like, and check back here to see what others have said.

As far as smartphones go, I'd recommend the Treo 650 / 680. Just tested them out earlier and getting it to work is only a question of plugging in the USB cable, pointing Evolution / gnome-pilot to the correct usb and pressing the hotsync button. Fantastic!

Two excellent pieces of advice; go with something plenty of people in the community are using; and the Treo works ...... well I'm hoping it'll work as easily for me cos I've just ordered the Treo 680! (not sure I'm really ready to do all the stuff required to sync my HTC Meteor)

Just the wireless networking to sort out and then I'm totally Ubuntu ;)
