We have the favourite food thread, what's your favourite beer?

Mine is Hoegaarden. I can't get enough after returning from the Alps where this was sold in abundance. Unfortunately it seems to be a bit of a rarity here in England.

Well, the best I've tried is Einbecker whilst visitng Germany, but here in the states I've got to support my local brewery - Bell's Oberon Ale is particularly good right now (while its in season), but I also enjoy Bell's Two Hearted. I enjoy most wheat beers, and fresh Pumpkin Ale can't be beat.

My first beer was a Guinness, which I love on tap. It tastes a little off from the bottle. I also like Dogfish Head brews such as the 90 Minute IPA (http://dogfish.com/brewings/Year_Round_Beers/90_Minute_IPA/11/index.htm) and Raison D'Etre (http://dogfish.com/brewings/Year_Round_Beers/Raison_DEtre/7/index.htm). The 120 Minute IPA (http://dogfish.com/brewings/Limited_Edition_Beers/120_Minute_IPA/15/index.htm) is also excellent, but it's sold individually and has quite a bit of alcohol in it (for a beer). I'm partial to Stella when I want a lighter beer, but 'light beer' such as Coors and Bud hurts me :(

Finally, what's in my fridge right now? Reissdorf Kölsch (http://www.reissdorf.de/).

Please.. don't call Carlsberg beer, as a dane I have to ask forgiveness for them whenever I go to a pub.. At it's best a Carlsberg is comparable to stall swampwater with unassorted dead stuff floating in it.

Personally I favor a New Castle Brown Ale. Hobgoblin and Caffrey's are also decent brews, when I went the US a few years back I had a decent american brew at the Washington airport though I can't remember the name of it.

Guinness, just can't be beaten. Nothing comes close. (Stoutwise anyways)

Just a few facts about it cause i seen a lot of people have some strange opinions of it.

The guinness you get from a tap and the guinness you get from a bottle are not the same product, someone said the bottle tastes a lot different, its meant to :)

There are loads and loads and loads of different varieties of guinness but by far the most popular and best is guinness draught on tap.

Guinness needs to be poured in 2 parts. Firstly at a 45 degree angle to about 4/5's full of the glass. Then it must be let settle until the brown bubbles stop rising to the bottom (Yes to the bottom) and it turns black (Its actually REALLY dark ruby but everyone just says black. Then it must be topped off and let settle again before drinking. The head (froth) on the top must not be deeper then an inch at most. NEVER accept a Guinness that has not being poured in 2 parts and i'd be very reluctant about accepting a guinness poured into a non-guinness glass. (The glass helps the settling)

Guinness Recipes;
Black and Tan or Half and Half - Guinness and Bass, (this drink can use any stout and any pale or amber ale, traditionally it is a combination of Guinness and Bass). Sometimes served with a pale lager such as Harp. More often called Half and Half when a pale lager is used. With careful pouring the Guinness settles on the top and the Bass settles to the bottom providing a two-tiered, layered effect.

Black Velvet - Guinness and Champagne in equal quantities.

Irish Car Bomb - A half-and-half shot of Irish Cream and Irish Whiskey is dropped into a half a pint glass of Guinness.

Poor Man's Black Velvet - Guinness and Cider in equal quantities. Also known as a Crown Float. Commonly known (incorrectly) in America as a Snake Bite.

Henry Weinhard's

Henry Weinhard’s Private Reserve

The West’s first premium beer, Henry Weinhard’s Private Reserve, is true to the heritage begun by Henry himself back when they called this the Oregon Territory. Fragrant Cascade hops set the tone in this lager, giving way to an earthy, bread-like malt finish, courtesy of premium two-row barley and the same yeast strain that Henry brought here 150 years ago. Private Reserve is still crafted in the old, 37-step brewing process, then aged to perfection. The result is a smooth, aromatic Northwest classic.

Henry Weinhard’s Blue Boar

Blue Boar roams everywhere from backyard parties to mountaintop lunches—wherever social occasions arise, which certainly befits a light, Irish-style ale. Double hopped, with a citrusy hello riding a cushion of nutty-sweet malt, Blue Boar has bite without excessive bitterness…just a slight, peppery zing in the finish. Though perfect from the bottle, Blue Boar really gets its Irish up in a pub glass, where its smooth, easy-drinking flavor shines through.
Malts: North American Select Pale and Caramel maltsHops: Double-hopped with Northwest Pale hopsCalories/ 12 oz: 144Carbohydrates (g): 12.4% Alcohol by Vol: 4.60Bitterness Units: 14.0

Henry Weinhard’s Hefeweizen

Feeling decadent? Henry’s Hefeweizen loves to bask on sunny beaches and ride along on campouts, or to add a touch of cool warmth (trust us, its not a contradiction in terms) to a winter evening with friends. Henry’s Hefeweizen is an unfiltered sensory treat, with a medium-light body, bright citrus overtones, and a base of malt dancing gracefully with honey. Top it with a lemon and spoil yourself today.

Malts: roasted caramel maltsHops: Pacific Northwest Cascade HopsCalories/12 oz: 151Carbohydrates: 12.9% Alcohol by volume: 4.86Bitterness units: 16.0http://www.henrys150.com/default.aspx?avToken=HXaQweSlEyBwunbOZf1Vdw6pX0jH/YsaLqqYrEyK
Henry Weinhard’s Blonde

Blonde adds a strong touch of Cascade hops to the richly malted, Bavarian-style golden lager that Henry brewed as a young apprentice back in Stuttgart, before he went way, way West. Pale and caramel malts lend rich sweetness, balanced by hoppy overtones of lemon and lime. A full-flavored refresher, perfect after a long day spent pounding rugged Cascade trails…or hammering out software, for that matter.

Malts: Pale and Caramel maltsHops: Cascade hopsCalories/12 oz: 161Carbohydrates (g): 14.1% Alcohol by Volume: 5.12Bitterness Units: 17.7http://www.henrys150.com/default.aspx?avToken=HXaQweSlEyBwunbOZf1Vdw6pX0jH/YsaLqqYrEyK
Henry Weinhard’s Summer wheat

When you and your friends are out in the summer sun, who wants to be weighed down by heavy beer? Summer wheat is as refreshing as a beer can be. Try topping it with a wedge of citrus to complement its aromatic Cascade hops and its hints of orange and coriander. Light and crisp, it’s just what you need to keep cool during strenuous days spent hiking, boating or just plain basking.http://www.henrys150.com/default.aspx?avToken=HXaQweSlEyBwunbOZf1Vdw6pX0jH/YsaLqqYrEyK
Henry Weinhard’s Classic Dark

Classic Dark’s rich midnight color conceals a surprisingly easy-drinking taste. Hey, it’s still a lager, after all. Aromatic Cascade hops balance an earthy, molasses-sweet finish, with none of the chewy aftertaste you might expect in dark beers. A perfect companion to falling leaves and your favorite winter clothes.
Malts: Munich, Chocolate, Wheat and three Pale MaltsHops: Cascade, Cluster and Mt. HoodCalories/ 12 oz: 169% Alcohol by Vol: 4.81Bitterness Units: 19.9http://www.henrys150.com/default.aspx?avToken=HXaQweSlEyBwunbOZf1Vdw6pX0jH/YsaLqqYrEyK
Henry Weinhard’s Organic Amber Premium Ale

“Nature knows best,” said Henry Weinhard, who brewed with nature’s own hops and grains 150 years ago. Now the Blitz-Weinhard Brewing Company returns to Henry’s legacy, brewing our Organic Amber Ale in Hood River, Oregon, with certified organic ingredients—clean ingredients for an ultra-clean taste.

This beer is a delicious blend of organic malts and regional hops for a touch of malty sweetness and elegantly smooth bitterness. Both ingredients are unmistakable, but neither dominates.

Finished to 5.25% ABV with moderate bitterness units, Henry Weinhard’s Organic Amber Premium Ale delivers a full bouquet highlighted by sweet malt and spicy hop notes, woven together for a premium taste sensation.
• Premium two row, crystal and Carapils barley malts

A very good English beer that certainly doesn't taste like or resemble **** is Theakston Old Peculier.

I certainly feel that Belgian beers are superior and that's coming from an Englishman ;)

Heh. I could have written a similar piece about Heineken (although I would have compared it which has already been drunk once and has already left the human body the natural way... ). seriously. a friend of mine, who had his saliva glands and part of his tongue removed (cancer), lived off beer when he went to italy. this guy was nuts. when his cancer came back, he ended up having to eat this chalky crap through a tube. however, being someone who always looked at life with as full a glass as he could manage, he would always add a few shots of fleischmann's to the chalky mix.

It will ship with a case of beer and the installation guide will tell you to drink at least half of it before installing. You'll get it installed, but won't remember how the next morning.

People listen,

Never have I seen a thread where so many have been so misguided
(apart from the Duvel/Chimay/Stella (possibly) crew)

Apart from the above - you should seriously do yourself a favour and try Singha beer - its from Thailand and it's quite simply the greatest beer I have EVER come across - and believe me I have come across quite a few - stuff all this Guinness crap (actually its a different thing altogether - a bit like comparing apples and cats). Its seriously unadulterated loveliness.

If ubuntu was a beer it would be Singha - and I don't say that lightly.

I'm off to open another bottle

hmmmm......

* EDIT * Staropramen (Czech Rep.) ain't bad either

I agree totally.

Singha is a true "Pils" beer.
I've been told that the brewery in Thailand was actually based on Belgian know-how from Jupiler.
I suggest that the main Pils breweries here in Belgium take this beer as an example, because our Pils beers are getting less and less good by the year. They're way to sweet for my taste.

Anyway, as stated in my previous post, the best Belgian beers are the true Trappist beers.

Greetings,
Steven

Seriously, if you have not tasted this, you need to get down to Tescos (in the UK) and treat yourself to a bottle. Its won two gold medals in Beer World Cups. To the OP, Hoegaarden is available at Tescos pretty much anywhere, but IMHO this beats it hands down.

http://www.etalon-beer.com.ua/eng/etalon/biia

Corona with a fresh slice of lime is another favourite, and there is a great cheap lager in Lidl which goes down very nicely with a rich creamy head called Perlenbacher.

I will drink pretty much any lager though, as long as it is cold enough. This to me is where most pubs in the UK totally fail; they *never* serve any drinks cold enough. This is why I much prefer to drink at home.

Just to throw something new into the mix, my favourite non-lager drink at the moment is Bourbon, fresh lime juice and ginger ale over ice. I'm also partial to Amaretto sours.

I am, but I'm actually interested in knowing some, in case I get stuck in Holland with a massive thirst ;). I don't want to suffer through Heineken...

A good pilsener is Brand. However, on a thirsty day, try one of the white beers, the most famous of which is Hoegaarden.
Here's a strange combination: if you find yourself in the region of Tilburg, and you order a Trappist, a good bartender will ask you whether you want some grenadine lemonade (undiluted, that is!) in it. It is actually quite a good combination, but it will not make you any less thirsty. In most cases, the Trappist used is La Trappe from a town called Berkel-Enschot, of which the Quadrupel is particularly good.

There are loads and loads and loads of different varieties of guinness but by far the most popular and best is guinness draught on tap.

http://i144.photobucket.com/albums/r161/crimesaucer/surger_montage.jpg

I agree that Guinness is better on tap then in bottle, but the pub draught cans and bottles are pretty damn good too since they use the draught-flow system.

Now as to say it's the best stout around is difficult.

It is one of the best and most original, but if you've ever had some of the micro brewed stouts of the Northwest, it's difficult to claim it so easily.

To drink Anderson Valley's "Barney Flats Oatmeal Stout" on tap is one of my favorite stouts I've ever had.

http://www.avbc.com/beers/stout.html

http://i144.photobucket.com/albums/r161/crimesaucer/bfos1.jpg

then Rouge makes some really good stouts like "Shakespeare Stout": http://www.rogue.com/brews.html#impstout

http://i144.photobucket.com/albums/r161/crimesaucer/Shakespeare_Stout.gif

and another favorite of mine is "Steelhead Stout" from Mad River Brewing Company: http://www.madriverbrewing.com/pages/brews.html

http://i144.photobucket.com/albums/r161/crimesaucer/Steelhead_Stout_25.gif

and another one that is good is Watneys Cream Stout:

http://i144.photobucket.com/albums/r161/crimesaucer/Cream_Stout.gif

I would recommend all of these, and would say that the best stout (well tied with Guinness) is the Anderson's Valley "Barney Flats Oatmeal Stout".

Now that was just my stout post...these are my other favorites:

http://i144.photobucket.com/albums/r161/crimesaucer/2198.jpg

Red Nectar is probably my favorite beer of all time: http://www.nectarales.com/nectar_news.html

I've been to Humboldt brewery and drank pitchers of it for happy hour. When I lived in Lake Tahoe, I would drink a 6pack of it almost every night. The other brews are good, but not as good as the sweet Red Nectar.

If Red Nectar wasn't at Luckys, then I would get this which is almost as good:

http://i144.photobucket.com/albums/r161/crimesaucer/Jamaica_Red.jpg

It's from the Mad River Brewing Company and when I visited friends up in Humboldt, we would drink kegs of it at parties.

...and this too:

http://i144.photobucket.com/albums/r161/crimesaucer/Steelhead_Pale.jpg

...and if you like porters, then this one is one of the best:

http://i144.photobucket.com/albums/r161/crimesaucer/Mocha_Porter.gif

and if you like to drink Mexican beers with a lime, these are really good:

http://i144.photobucket.com/albums/r161/crimesaucer/5807.jpg

http://i144.photobucket.com/albums/r161/crimesaucer/GRUPO-16.jpg

I like to drink these when at the beach surfing in Mexico, or when eating Mexican food.

and for a good Asian beer, I like this one:

http://i144.photobucket.com/albums/r161/crimesaucer/tsingtao.gif

and of course, my favorite stout is this one:

http://i144.photobucket.com/albums/r161/crimesaucer/BarneyFlatsBig.jpg

but my two favorite beers to drink are Humboldt Red Nectar and Anderson Valley's Barney Flats Oatmeal Stout.

and of course Duvel and Guinness are really good too.

I agree with the last post.. There is nothing better than a beer you've brewed yourself.. It's like trying to compare Grandma's homemade apple pie to something you got from the frozen food section of the grocery store. It's easy to do too... a perfect project to get a GEEK like me away from the computer for awhile... lots of fun... I recommend you try it soon! Besides the homebrews.. variety is good... I'm rather fond of Young's Oatmeal Stout (creamy smooth and dark).. on the darkside... Pilsner Urquell on the light side.... many more in between them...(sorry if misspelled the Pilsner... from memory!) ... while I am an American myself, and will drink the "popular" beers like a Budweiser occasionally.. I really don't understand why they are the most popular... there are many more styles and great flavors out there.

Tut, tut tut... you disappoint me... for one thing, only four people, quoted below, mentioned Czech beer, two of them unwittingly, and for another, y'all think beer is alcohol. It's not. It's a soft drink. Or, at least it is in the Czech Republic. See here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Beer_consumption_by_country

You're the winner, the Pilsner is the best the country has to offer, and you spelt it right ;) I'm not sure if I should interpret the fact that you remember it as that you drank it often enough... or that you didn't drink yourself unconscious ;)

3. Local Microbrew
4. Other

Ignorance is blizz.

Obviously you didn't read my post #11...which in my opinion are the best beers brewed in the world (and you can add Duval)...those 8 beers (or 9 with Duval), beat all Ales, Stouts, and Porters that I've tried, and I've tried beers from all of over the world...I've gone to bars that have international beer menus and very few beers are better than the microbreweries of the Northwest ...I've drank at microbreweries and bars all over the Northern California coastline, as well as traveling through towns like Breckenridge or Flagstaff...and nothing can compare to the beers served from the Humboldt Brewing Company, Mad River Brewing Company, Rouge brewery, and the Anderson Valley Brewing Company.

I've also drank local beers when in Spain, Portugal, and Mexico, and they were good Lagers and Pilsners, but nowhere near as good as a Nor Cal Pale Ale...and if you haven't had a TsingTao then what do you know about a good Chinese beer brewed from a natural spring using a German recipe since 1903: http://www.tsingtaobeer.com/tsingtao_history_lager.php

...I only added my Pilsner and Lager choices as a side topic of p_quarles (since I normally avoid Pilsners and Lagers for the tastes of Ales, Stouts, and Porters)...and if you've ever actually been to Amsterdam and the local bars, you might of developed a taste for Amstel and Heineken (which wasn't that bad there, even though I prefer Belgium Ales to Holland Lagers)...but what would you know about beer.

You didn't even list your favorites...

By strict definition, however, lager refers to cold-filtering, which is the process used by pilsners. But, yeah, it's kind of a distinct subset, enough to get its own place in my book.

I did see post #11, but indeed I did not realize that was you.

Seriously, to say Amstel (Light ?) or Keiniken are good, that's pushing it. It's equivalent to telling a Unix / Linux sysadmin that WIndows 95 was a good operating system.

I happened to be in Thailand once, and in tried the local pilsner there, while all the other tourists would - of course - have Heineken. To my supprice, the Thai plisner was far better than Heiniken. In fact, it came quite close to an average Belgian pilsner.

Yes I do, I mis-spelled Duvel as Duval...which I included as one of my top nine beers worldwide (in post #27)...and I stated that Belgium beers were really good (far better then Holland Lagers), I like how they bubble like the champaign of beers, I'll be sure to try the other two (if I haven't already tried them and forgotten the names, classifying them just as tasty Belgium beers).

I also used to hate Heineken because I didn't like beers like Heineken/Becks/Grolsch... but after going to Amsterdam, I drank it because I was low on money and it was the cheapest...so I think of Holland when I drink those beers, which is basically never...since I usually get a better beer for my money.

Location will make bad beer taste good, like drinking large bottles of Tecate wrapped with a Mexican newspaper to keep it cold in the Baja desert, or drinking Pacifico "ballenas" w/ Limón while surfing the beaches of Baja Sur... ice cold from a cooler of block ice.

We would drink boxes of Pacifico "ballenas" when I would go surfing in Baja...once for a week in Baja Norte: http://www.surfline.com/reports/report_satellite.cfm?id=6088

...another time for almost 3 months in Todos Santos of Baja Sur: http://www.surfline.com/reports/report_satellite.cfm?id=6114

...and my last time I was there in the year 2000, on the East cape of San José del Cabo, which was for almost 4 whole months of camping and surfing on the east cape beach called Nine Palms (as well as Cerritos and Pastorals): http://www.surfline.com/reports/report_satellite.cfm?id=6121...

*-ballenas means whales...which are the large, 40ounce sized bottles of beer with the whale on the Pacifico label... so people call the beers, "ballenas", meaning the Large Pacifico bottles.

Now you say "relax"...but seriously...ignorance is bliss? Come on, I doubt you've tried any of the beers that I mentioned.

Have you ever tried a Humboldt Brewing Company "Red Nectar", or a Mad River Brewing Company "Steelhead Pale Ale" and "Jamaican Red Ale", or an Anderson Valley "Barney Flats Oatmeal Stout"...if you haven't, you should. How about Rouge?

I have worked in the Restaurant industry for 18 years, and I've worked in Gourmet Restaurants that serve the best Wines and Beer...and I've always had a palette for both food and beer, have had friends that were Wine/Beer reps for restaurants...and I've traveled a little bit... so I know Belgium beers are world class, but I also know that a good Californian Microbrew can be better...as well as a brew from Oregon.

And to finish this short story, I had my first Duvel when drinking with a fake ID at age 17 in a Washington D.C. bar called the Brickskellar (I'm 34 now). The Brickskellar brags about having the world's largest beer menu, check it out here: http://www.thebrickskeller.com/

SCROLL DOWN THIS LIST FOR THE BRICKSKELLAR MENU!!!! (some say it's the world's largest beer menu...prices are a little steep when you actually go there): http://www.thebrickskeller.net/_wsn/page3.html

...it was about that time in 1990/1991/1992 that I had decided that I didn't like "regular" lagers and pilsners that most people drank in the bars and parties of my area...and instead of those crappy beers, I began to drink Watneys Cream Stout and Red Barrel Ale, Guinness Pub Draughts, Sierra Nevada Pale Ales, Porters and Stouts, Anchorsteam, Anchor Porters, Liberty Ales, Bass Ale....it was also around that time that I learned that Pete's Wicked, Samuel Adams, Dominion Ales, Saranacs, and a few other beers that people claim as "microbrewed", just didn't compare...and they still don't. Then I moved to Lake Tahoe when I was 20 years old and have loved the microbrews of the Northwest ever since.

And as for chilling out and having a beer, I wish I did have a cold beer right now...I'm craving a Red Nectar Ale....so damn good, and nowhere to be found in Alexandria Virginia.

Geographical location can play a role. After a while, though, I find that the location of the beer itself (i.e, within reach, or not) matters even more. :P

Another great midwestern brewery: Three Floyds. Especially their Alpha King pale ale. The hoppiness is amplified by some serious citric acidity. It's not fruity or sweet, though, and has almost no aftertaste. Try it if you can find it. Don't let the "made in Indiana" label fool you.

Any mellow or somewhat dark and with a slight bitter after taste will do.

Black Butte Porter from Deschutes Brewery, Bend, Oregon (http://www.deschutesbrewery.com/BrewPub/OnTap/5832.aspx).

Technically not a microbrew as it is available in most states (including Hawaii and Alaska) but it really cant fairly be classified in the same ranks as "domestic," Bud wouldn't even stand a chance just by looks alone, let alone after you got the first sip of brown porter goodness.

Stone's IPAs in general are amazing. My bottle of their 10th Anniversary IPA is one of my prized possessions.

I think, though, my favorite beer currently would be the Kasteel Bruin. Best Quadrupel I've had so far except maybe the Rochefort 10.

Great topic :D

My fav is Frisco. First taste it an year ago here in Prague and ever since it's my tip-top choice of beer treat.

The cool thing about it is that it's a beer with apple and lemons (no seriously) :)
