There is one simple thing that makes a lot of difference that people usually have a hard time learning about. It is how to Google Search.

I have asked many questions in these forums, but in most cases, the answers can always be searched from Google.

Can someone make a good "Howto: Google Search." If there has already been one, please tell me (if that is the case, then my Google Search skills are not good enough! haha).

Hope this helps.
Cheers.

Well for Ubuntu problems, here are two tips.

1. If you get an error, Google the error message. To make sure you get error messages, launch the application from the terminal (http://www.psychocats.net/ubuntu/terminal) instead of from the launcher icon. For example, if you wanted to see errors from Firefox, you'd type
firefox in the terminal. You'd then highlight the errors, copy them, paste them into the Google search box, and see what results show up.

2. Search the Forums. Google search results are pretty good for the Ubuntu forums. Let's say you want to do know what a good FTP client is. Just type
site:ubuntuforums.org good FTP client in the Google search box, and it'll give you relevant results from these forums.

Even if you wrote a good guide most people won't bother reading it, human nature.

You can do some very powerful searches with google and get great results if you know what you are doing.

Thanks for the tip.

That's really helpful, aysiu. I never knew those things before. I just want to know; are there always results when you Google search error outputs?

I'd say most of the time you do.

Now, are those results going to be helpful? Not necessarily.

But it is often the best way to find a solution if someone else has had that same error and actually managed to fix it.

I just googled "how to google" and found googleguide (http://www.googleguide.com/).
Try to say that five times fast :lolflag:

And, on a more useful note, instead of doing the site: google search you can install an ubuntu-forums search plugin for Firefox from Mycroft (http://mycroft.mozdev.org/download.html?name=ubuntu+forums&sherlock=yes&opensearch=yes&submitform=Search)

Try to use something like this in Google search: (alter at will)

intitle:"index.of" (mp3|mp4|avi|mpg) beatles -html -htm -php -asp -cf -jsp
