I like the Portugese translation of "free software": Software livre - which goes good with fava beans and a nice kianti.

yep.. portuguese has a clear translation.. cause "livre" comes from "liberdade" that means "freedom"

and free can be translated to portuguese as "livre" or "grátis" grátis is "free of charge"

So the portguese translation to free software is very clear and CAN'T be confused with "free of charge" ;)

I think most languages other than english (and German (frei / frei)) have a clear distinction between "livre" and "gratis".
French: libre / gratuit
Czech: zdarma / svobodny
-> makes me guess that all romantic (french, port., spanish...) and slavic (czech, slovak, russian...) are clear. Germanic, English included, are not. Free/free. But WE know what we're talking about.
