In connection with this post:

I need a nice and cool gallery system for my forum. It is about artists and their paintings. There must be upload option, each user should have access to its own gallery via a link in the profile, comments and rating to each painting etc. My hosting is running php and mysql.
Thanks in advance!

I like Gallery2
http://gallery.menalto.com/

It works well on its own or in conjuction with Drupal or Joomla or other CMS software.

In the past, I've always used Coppermine (http://coppermine-gallery.net/).
I like it better than Gallery...

edit: It really was a while back... both programs have evolved a lot, and they both will be sufficient enough for your needs.
The installation of Gallery2 didn't seem that easy, and I think it can only be used on a server with PHP5 support (correct me if I'm wrong).

Coppermine is nice, too.
