Not sure if I should post this here, but I remember I had an app that allowed me to have transparent menus and windows in GNOME. It was pretty cool...if anyone remembers the name, I'd be happy. ;-)

You'll want xcompmgr and transset... a quick search of the forums for those terms should show the howto - including the changes you need to make to xorg.conf
