Well bugger - I thought it was a neat idea, so went and added a little animation to mine, tried to upload it and was told I'm not allowed to load animated avatars :(

Not a fan of animated avatars... too distracting imho. I would much rather see well made avatars of a single frame.

I don't like animated avatars but prizrak's one is so nice.

Both are nice, but overall, I don't like animated avatars.

(Though figuring out a way to have the water shimmer on my avatar would be pretty cool.)

From the Forum FAQ (http://ubuntuforums.org/announcement.php?f=48)
Why can't I use an animated gif as my avatar?
In the past (up to sometime near the end of 2005) users were allowed to use animated gifs as avatars. This ended when there was a sudden wave of really distracting and obnoxious flashing, gaudy avatars. (Honestly, can you concentrate on information when looking at animated avatars like these (http://www.ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?p=1741535#post1741535)?) Rather than make a long list of what is an isn't acceptable for animated avatar usage and then forcing the staff to monitor and police their use it was decided that they would be banned altogether. Those users who had appropriate animated avatars at the time were allowed to keep them and so you may see a small number of them floating around the forums. If/when those users decide to change their avatars they will not be allowed to replace the current animated gifs with another animated avatar but will have to choose an regular non-moving picture like the rest of us.

I think that they are great!! I fail to see how "geeks" and "smart" people let there minds get "distracted' by animated avatars. Answer to thread would have to be RAV-TUX's old one of the peek-a-boo penguin :D

The quote on your post was one of the most amazing i read...
why user's animated avatars are considered distracting but ridiculous bumping popcorns, guitar players and big bouncing lols in the middle of posts are not considered disturbing?

yep, they should be disabled by default (as they did with annoying users avatars) at least at technical/support forums...

An interesting psychological aspect. Have you noted that the higher visual disturbing a image is the higher is the tendency of repeat it?

As an example. Usually a user that don't use animated icons, when want to mention something funny normally use one , animated pro users if they want to do the same, although they use a larger and more visible image, they usually made a full line with 4 or 5 animated lols or guitar players...

btw, whats the meaning of a guitar player at the end of a post... never understand that (this forum are not even about music stuff...)

Have to agree with you. This smilies are very disturbing!!! You can find the avatar only in the post header, but smilies... you find 10000000 of them in a thread (well, just a figure of speech)

alas. The 2 depicted are quite sufficient to underscore practical limits.
Unanchored hood ornaments could reverse years of eye-level 3rd

I had never noticed until now that that popcorn smiley was animated. If you don't like animated smilies or avatars you can turn of all gif animation, as I do.

Oops, it isn't? it's so big and out of context... my brain must have developed a "plugin" that try to remove them, so it gives them the least attention as it possible :)

i'm not against animated gifs... and i don't want to disable them.
I just don't like them on support threads, while i read someones problem or read someones answer... i don't care much if they appear on "informal" forums like cafe or backyard.

I can understand issues with idiots going crazy with large files as avatars - a forum I used to frequent had some users using 1Mb+ images as their avatars. When I suggested a file size limit on avatars, I was told by the then forum owner that "everyone has broadband these days, so I don't see the harm". Say no more on that :)

However, if an animation is within size limits (say 20Kb and 80 x 80) I think it should be allowed. I find the distraction argument a little sad really. Has the whole world suddenly got ADHD, and are unable to read because there's a little movement occurring on the screen? Seems a little crazy to me, but such is life - I only thought to bother doing it because of this thread anyway. :)

apparently not the whole world just Ubuntu users...;) ( just my sense of humor)

actually all anybody has to do is go to their user CP and select 'not to show avatars', smileys, sigs and then the distraction is eliminated.

Sometimes the simpliest solutions are overlooked.

and as far as arguments about support forums not needing animated avatars, this may be true but this may be why most productive and reliable dev work and support communication is in the form of mailing list and not forums. (just my humble view)

i'm much more likely thrown into a fit of ADD by the content of someone's post rather than the pretty movement of their av.
