"The Glossy Gnu will nonetheless play a role in this next release,
because Ubuntu 7.10 will feature a new flavour - as yet unnamed - which
takes an ultra-orthodox view of licensing: no firmware, drivers,
imagery, sounds, applications, or other content which do not include
full source materials and come with full rights of modification,
remixing and redistribution. There should be no more conservative home,
for those who demand a super-strict interpretation of the "free" in free
software. This work will be done in collaboration with the folks behind
Gnewsense."

I know we like 100% open software, but is this a step forward or a step back?

I hope we will not loose a bit of user-friendliness with this move.

It's only another variation. The regular release will still exist.

It's a good idea. It brings the gNEWSENSE guys back into the fold, and allows people to be ideologically pure if they so desire.

I'm relieved that there will be this version and the regular version.

..anyone else think "gNewSense" is REAL close to "nuisance"? :P

.. and an explicit acknowledgement of the work of the Free Software Foundation. Very nice indeed.

Maybe I misunderstood the letter, so it is a very good news as you sayed...2 variations very good

I like it

so we'll have the ready-to-use desktop (with some not 100% open softw)
and the 100% open software one

very good...

thank you for replying

That's the point. It's to make fun of how RMS is sometimes called a GNuisance.

Yeah I stumbled across that one myself, Mark needs to make his points a bit clearer sometimes. What his saying is that we will have Ubuntu, Kubuntu, Xubuntu, Edubuntu and Freebuntu (well I dunno if that's gonna be the name). I think we need some sticky announcement since people seem to be confused.
