Just an off the wall question to see how many people out there enjoy sushi/maki as much as I do. It's my favorite delicacy (spurred on from another poll in this forum).

Want to try, but haven't yet. Hopefully try when I go to japan next year. Also want to try sake (rice wine)

Had a few times but I would not say I'm crazy about it. Can play some interesting pranks on people with the wasabi though :)

With a name like musashi you know I'm into some things Japanese. I lived there for 5 years and love most kinds of sushi/sashimi. It's hard to get good sushi around here though. It's so small and pricey compared to Japan. I wish I could afford to go back often.

I love sushi, but I'm sad to say that I'm not too excited by sashimi. I've tried really hard to aquire a taste for smoked and raw fish, but I just can't do it - It just tastes like a really off tasting, fishy slug in my mouth. I feel like I'm missing out, because it seems like a lot of people I know really like the raw and smoked fish types - but I sadly have little control over my gag reflex!!

But yeah, sushi - the cooked variety - is absolutely fantastic. The best places in Perth for Sushi are definately Jaws Kaiten Sushi in Perth City, and Takas Sushi in Perth City and Fremantle (though Takas in Perth was *much* better before it moved from the downtown food court - it kind of sucks a little now that it's up on Barrack St. (or I think that's the street, anyhow) - the food doesn't seem as fresh?)

My favourites include the one that's like a california roll, but with caviar on the outside; prawn roll; california roll; cucumber roll; teriyaki chicken roll; potato salad roll; rice noodle roll; and most of the beef types. I love most of the rest of the menu too - tempura, yaki tori, anything with soba noodles, teriyaki tofu, chicken or beef, etc, etc, etc. - all delish!

Sushi itself is soo good with a bowl or two of miso soup, and a generously filled dish of Kikkoman soy sauce. I don't mind wasabi, but I don't really like it put straight on to the sushi. I think it's best if you put a bit in your soy sauce dish and mix it in a little, and then dip your sushi in - makes it more dispersed and is SO tasty! Some warm green tea to wash it all down is preferable, too!

I prefer nigiri to the rolls, but I'm not that picky. Some toro or sake nigiri, some tea, and some soy sauce and wasabi, and it is ON!

I prefer Sashimi 刺身 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sashimi) Instead.

Sashimi is similar to sushi (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sushi), another Japanese food, often featuring raw fish, that is commonly served at the same establishments. Non-Japanese often confuse these two dishes, which are however considered distinct and separate by Japanese.
Differences between sushi and sashimi include:
sushi contains additional ingredients beyond fish and garnishes (at a minimum, rice (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rice) and vinegar (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vinegar))
sushi often has other featured ingredients instead of raw meat
sushi is made at home less commonly than sashimiAnother sashimi-like dish is namasu (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Namasu), which consists of, among other ingredients, raw marinated fish, and was originally introduced from ancient China (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/China) to ancient Japan (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Japan)http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sashimi

The Sashimi I like the best is とろ Toro: Fatty Tuna (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tuna)

Toro (toh-roh) is the term for the fatty part of the tuna, found in the belly portion of the fish. Toro is further broken up into two distinct subtypes, and they are more expensive due to their relative scarcity as a proportion of the entire fish. The two types of toro are:Chutoro (choo-toh-roh) & Otoro (oh-toh-roh) http://sushifaq.com/sushi-items/sushi-items-tuna-maguro.htm

of the types of Toro I like Chutoro the best:

Chutoro (choo-toh-roh), which is sometimes labeled chu-toro, is the belly area of the tuna along the side of the fish between the akami and the otoro. It is often preferred because it is fatty but not as fatty as otoro. http://sushifaq.com/sushi-items/sushi-items-tuna-maguro.htm

here the info on Otoro:

Otoro (oh-toh-roh), which is sometimes labeled o-toro, is the fattiest portion of the tuna, found on the very underside of the fish. This cut is fatty almost to the point of falling apart and can literally melt in your mouth.http://sushifaq.com/sushi-items/sushi-items-tuna-maguro.htm

Are you sure it was fresh? The raw fish should taste sweet and have no odour. If it tasted fishy, it was not proper sushi-grade fish.

In montreal, a lot of the sushi shops started making "spring maki" which is basically a spring roll (stuff wrapped in rice paper) made with suchi rice and other sushi ingredients inside instead of noodles.

Now that I live in Kingston, I often visit a popular sushi restaurant here that offers pretty good sushi and they have an all-you-can-eat meal.

After a meal there, I don't feel like eating anymore for at least a day.... Mmmmm.

God I love toro.

I'm a big fan of Japanese in general and sushi/sashimi specifically. Actually, I would say it's borderline addiction as I go eat Japanese food AT LEAST twice a week. In Shanghai, it's not too expensive. All-you-can-eat + all-you-can-drink is a pretty standard price at around USD $18. It's one of the best things to do with a group of friends.

I love sushi :) I've tried sashimi, and it's a bit "hardcore" for me lol. (Need more to taste than just the fish/bed of rice.) I love dragon roll (kind of cheating, since it's bbq'ed eel I think?) hehe. I'm not too sure what other stuff I like, I never know the types of fish and veggies that are in each roll, but it's all good :D I've tried sake, not a fan. I enjoy Korean food as well (different topic altogether). :)

I love Sushi too, salmon is my favourite. I really like sashimi too, sometimes my parent just buy a big raw salmon fish and DIY at home, it is really really good.

Salmon is what I call the "gateway fish" to other sashimi. :)

Many people, myself included, often start eating salmon sashimi/sushi then move on to tuna, mackerel, yellowtail, etc, etc.

Like many things, the taste is acquired.

Well I don't know if it is just me... but when I first eat salmon I thought it was cooked, just to be told it is sashimi. I was like 7 though.

I love sushi, but not california rolls (or any types of rolls, really). White tuna is my favourite, and I also like eel.
